Vista will probably have DX10 installed but unless you have a DX10 display card all DX10 complaint games will fall back into DX9 mode

after service pack one check it again, should say dx 10.1 as far as i know

Vista's SP's work the same as the XP ones. It's like a patch. You won't lose anything.

It doesn't say that under dxdiag but it add's some dx 10.1 files under the registry and system 32 folder.
