I was playing around with my tax calculator and had finally put in my medical aid payments, and it asked if I have a disability. I said yes, and when it calculated, it took the full amount of medical aid payment into account and not just 625 pm you are entitiled too. is that because of being disabled?

Check out this link if you would like to find out more about what qualifies as a physical disability, look at 3.2.3 b) http://www.moonstoneinfo.com/Morpheus/documentlibrary/67.pdf This info document is from 2008 I think so the capping amount is R625per month per main member for 2010.

As far as I know, having a physical disability does not allow your full medical fund contributions as a deduction, you are still capped. Only if you are above the age of 65 the capping does not apply.
All your expenses relating to the disability are allowed though, that is why there is a separate space for that on your return.

See this too for a comprehensive list http://www.sars.gov.za/Tools/Documents/DocumentDownload.asp?FileID=57940

HMM, I was just thinking, perhaps it was thinking that the amount was for the full year and i only claimed for two, so it got confused. thanks for the links. will check them out.

the claim for disability is different to that of "normal" medical expenses.
the balance, of the expenses, after the first R500 is deducted in full.

i.e. medical expenses come to R17000 - R500 = R16 500 is allowed as a deduction.
