Disabled vehicle rental

Hi all,

My brother got in a serious car crash about a month ago and is getting released in a few weeks. To make a long story short I would like to know if it possible to rent a wheelchair friendly vehicle, for 6-12 months?
Just to explain, his one leg is in still in full cast, and the wires on his hip wont allow him to get into a vehicle comfortably never mind sit in it for a hour.

A disabled vehicle would be stationary unless someone is pushing it. :p

On a more serious note though, a long term lease is very expensive, and I'm quite sure the niche aspect of this market will drive up costs as well. Hopefully you come right though...

should probably rename the title to disable person vehicle rental...
 
Wow, tried to do some digging for you and the disabled are really not well looked after in this respect in SA. Considering the expense of long term leases (I imagine nothing short of R8k per month) of a suitable vehicle without modifications and additional insurance premiums, might it not be worthwhile considering a chauffeur or taxi service hire on an ad-hoc basis instead?

The problem is, my parents house is in a very small town, and the roads are terrible, its busy getting rebuilt now, so getting the car there will be a mission. And my brother will need to need to move about for physical therapy, twice a week. My dad is busy looking at trading in his car and then using a Chrysler Voyager for the duration, seeing that the front seats can fold into the floor and the middle seats can lean back a bit.

does he need a vehicle that he can drive or simply a vehicle that allows for somebody in a wheelchair to be loaded into the vehicle as a passenger?
 
In Cape Town we have a service called Dial a Ride for the disabled to get around. Maybe check if your province offers something similar.
 
When I shattered my leg I bought a cheap old Merc 230 automatic that had a big bench seat in the back. When enough pins, plates, and screws had been removed I could drive it (it was my left leg fortunately)… although I occasionally caught the pins of the external fixator that stuck out of my shin on the steering column. :eek:
 
At R 8k a month just buy a cheap bakkie with a canopy and load him in the back. You can make the back of a bakkie rather comfortable. And he will have ample space to move in.

What I would do. You can pick them up for under R50k with around 250k km, which will be your quick (and cheap) fix. Then flog it when you are done and recover your money. Bob's ya uncle.....
 
Just use Dial A Ride. The fees are nominal, R5 to R10 a trip. You have to book in advance for each trip though.

Any van type vehicle with a sliding door and the middle row of seats removed should be workable. Microbus, Voyager, Vito, etc. You can always put the seats back and sell when you done.
