Disabling DHCP on Planet router...and more

Hi All...

I'm brand spanking new to this forum, so bear with me.

I have a small network, with around 11 pc's & 3 printers.

Most pc's use XP Pro, one uses 98SE, and the server runs Server 2k03.

My ADSL Router is a planet ADE-3100 (Looks like it) with IP 10.0.0.2, DHCP enabled.

ISP: Telkom

Here's the case:
I Would like to DISable the DHCP on the Router, and use the Server instead.
Then I would like to install a second nic in the server, and connect the router directly to the server, instead of the switch (currently its connected to switch)

I know this sounds nuts, but there's 2 main reasons for this:

1. Using the router as DHCP server, seems inconsistent. The internet tends to go down quite often, and the only resolution seems to be, to redo all the settings on the router.

2. We want the server to run a firewall and protect twe whole network, instead of running a firewall on each pc. (therefore the second nic, with router directly on server?)

Now all you Technowizzards, please tell me wether this is advisable, or not, and what would be a better proposition?

You can do that all. very easy. Connect to your planet router and disable the setting there. (I have the same router. Think it is under LAN options???) and assign a fixed IP to the router that is close to the range you want to you (normally the same as your range with .0 at the end and then begin the range from 1 on.

To connect directly to the server with seperate NIC, just set the router in bridge mode. It's there, just look. If you have trouble, just PM me and I will look for them and give you the presice position in the menu of each option.

I will only attempt this later in the year, but I'm already making plans for the "huge" transition. (to me it's a huge one). I will prolly pm you, Louis - thanx for that.

One concern: with the proposed setup, will antivirus software only on the server, result in protection for all the clients?

That will only protect against some virusses.

Ok, so should I not use such a setup, or what? Please suggest a better idea.
I think I know what yoy mean: some files will get through the server, and not look like a virus, but once it installs on a machine it will be visible as a virus? (e.g. processes running?)
