PS: This has been tested on an Option data card and should work for either cards. (v3g to confirm)
Since a lot of people have been asking how to connect without the dash I hope this will be able to assist them in how to set it up. There is a more advance method which requires a manual method of setting up the card (and the Dash is not needed apart from loading the drivers), but since I am lazy I still use the Dash to do the initial profile setup. Once that is done and the PIN is disabled you can close the dash and forget about it.
The process to create a connection without the Dash requires you to disable the pin on the SIM first (Same rule applies for setting it up in Linux).
To disable the PIN:
1. Start the Dash
2. Tools > Untick Request PIN Code
(As far as I know it will prompt you for your pin. Once you have entered it will disable the pin request on the SIM. This can also be done using a normal phone. Ie. Enter the sim in a gsm phone and disable the pin code request under the phone security settings)
To get this far into the process you would have had to set up a profile, which once created, depending on your OS, will create a dial up connection under network connections labelled as follows: "3G Only", "3G Preferred", "GPRS Only", "GPRS Preferred". Double click on the to connection you wish to use as if connecting via a normal modem. (Look at the lights on the card to determine what connection is currently selected Blue = 3G, Green = GPRS)
Hope this helps. v3g or forum mods - Could you please check if this is usefull and apply the neccessary digital glue. If you need more detailed info on the profile setup I will be happy to extend this to include it, but the process is fairly simple with the dash installed.
