Hi guys,

came across a new problem yesterday.
I was battling with my dial up connection as in everytime I reconnected it would create a new name for the connection, ie from NeoConnect to NeoConnect 2 and thus loosing all my redial and other settings.

I also noticed that when I switched between user accounts it would drop the connection and need to reconnect.

I am using Vista 32 bit Ultimate.
Anyone else have this problem?

It disconnects when you switch accounts since the beginning of user switching unless Fast-user switching was turned on in XP.

As for dialup settings I have 4 dsl accounts and they don't duplicate and lose settings at all so no info there :(

I use dialup to connect my 3G modem to the Vodacom network and it drops the connection when I log out or switch users. Windows dialup issue? It does not duplicate the connection though so I am guessing that is a Neotel issue...

Well thats just bollocks, how can it disconnect on user switching!!!
I'm now going to google to find a way around it, thats stupid!

If you find a way around it please post back here? I find it annoying too! Thanks.

Heres what I have found so far:

If your comfortable with editing the registry there is a tweak for XP which keeps RAS connection alive while switching users. Make sure you back the registry up before your attempt. Use this at your own risk!!

1. Start the Registry Editor
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\Winlogon
3. Right-click an empty space in the right-hand pane, and from the menu select New > String value
4. Name the new value KeepRASConnections
5. Right-click the KeepRASConnections value, and choose Modify from the menu
6. Enter 1 as the Value data
7. Close the registry editor and log off from Windows for the changes to take effect

Next time you switch user (Start > Log Off > Switch User), you shouldn't lose your connection!

OR
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The instructions below should be a solution and enable you to stay
connected to the internet while switching users:

To enable Fast User Switching:
Log on to the computer as an administrator. (or an account that has
the necessary permissions to change Control Panel options, generally
your normal account).
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.

Click Change the way users log on or off.
If it is not already selected, click to select the Use the Welcome
screen check box.
Click to select the Use Fast User Switching check box, and then click
Apply Options. Quit the User Accounts tool.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll try the second one first when I get home.

I can't help with your second problem, but I got around the multiple dial-up problem by manually creating my own dial up connection and only using that to connect instead of NeoConnect Manager. The downside is that you have to find an alternate way to log your bandwidth usage (DU meter perhaps). If you're on the unlimited package then all's OK.

I did that and uninstalled the neoconnect manager, but thats when I started getting these problems. I'm using Netlimiter to monitor my Usage thanks.

I left NeoConnect Manager installed. Maybe uninstalling it messed up the device drivers as well. Just a thought...

Its possible but I could delete my dial up connection and create a new one quickly. The device has not changed in the device manager. I would think that NeoConnect Manager simply manages the connection like windows in a pretty way.

I thought Windows was just as simple as a driver installation. :D So there must be some good in Linux. ;)

It would be very easy in Windows If i had one computer and one user. Its the networking and multiple users per computer thats causing me headaches, all of which could've been avoided by a ethernet device

K, so couldn't find the Fast switching in Windows Vista because it is now default in Vista.

So I went the editing the registry route to keep RAS connections.
Will give it a good test and keep you guys posted.
