Discovery Classic Smart

I’m not happy with new new medication changes coming next year. Capped at R1500 per year and only for schedule 3 and above.

Thank you. This is great feedback. Was there any co-payment for the ER visit. Did you by any chance go to Sunninghill and was then transferred to Netcare Waterfall?

I can't be 100% sure yet about the copayment as I haven't submitted the claim yet. But the documents don't indicate one. I could be wrong.
We went to Carstenhof, cause we thought it was part of the smart plan, but it wasn't.
The Discovery hospital network is really odd. Like one hospital may be part of some cheaper plans, but not others.

I'm also on Classic Smart. Very happy with it. Don't really need to go to doctors a lot, but when I do, it's just R50 a visit and meds most of the time were R10 co-payment only when prescribed.

Same with me. They also covered the ECG's I had. If you are willing to stick with a network hospital and one of the doctors, it's very much worth it (over say something like the Coastal Core, which I was on before). It's serious bang for buck. Also, not all the doctors in the network are not that smart. The doctor I'm seeing now is probably one of the best I've had. Well worth the change, you just need to make sure you are happy with your doc and nearest hospital.

Does anyone know how I can get the list of doctors that are on the Smart Network?

I would suggest also getting a gap cover, one that pays for one out of network hospital visit per year. I use Stratum.
For those cases where you want to use a specific specialist, who only operates from a specific (non network) hospital, and charges more than 200% medical aid rates.
Mine has already paid for itself.

I already have good GAP cover with Complimed (Turnberry) and they do cover the non-network penalty fee. In your example above, did Discovery also pay the fee for the non-network specialist that you used?

Once you are on the smart plan, you can search from the discovery site. I don't know how to get the list if you're not yet a member.

Yes, but, the first visit was for a gastroscopy, which is a covered procedure. As it was done in his rooms, they just covered it. If it was part of a hospital admission, I would have had to pay the co-payment.
Then they covered the operation itself up to the 200% rate.

I have visited different non-network specialists, but as it was only for a consultation and not a hospital admission, they weren't covered.
I personally don't care too much, as on any other plan it would have come out of the MSA, meaning I would have paid for it anyway.

Hi, I am in exactly the same situation that you were in last year, considering downgrading from Classic Priority to Classic Smart. Do you perhaps have any feedback regarding your experience with this for 2019? Thanks

Not a bad experience at all. Apart from co-payments at the GP and pharmacy the only things we paid out of pocket for were:

1. An X-Ray for my wife
2. Prescribed Contraceptives and Hypnotics
3. A single specialist consultation fee
4. Odds and ends at the GP (disposables, urine tests etc)

I had an admission for a minor surgical procedure in a Smart Network hospital and hospital and specialists accounts were paid in full.

Definitely going to stay on the Smart Plan for the foreseeable future although not very happy that they're limiting the Acute medicine benefit for 2020.
