Given that we're in the middle of a pandemic, and all the "we care about you" advertising from Discovery Health, one would think they would at least cover COVID-19 testing?

I had a test after being referred by a doctor (negative thankfully) and they declined the payment as my savings are used up. I understand under normal conditions lab tests are from savings but surely during a pandemic they could part with some of their Billions of rands to cover tests for their members?

I remember them stating that they will pay if you turn out positive. As a member I’m happy for them to take this approach because people will just test ultimately increasing my premium. These test are like 2k.

the tests are around 700

mass testing will be cheaper im sure

but yeah they said only if you are positive they pay

and now they said they will get a bed for you ...i wonder how true that is

And how do they know i'm positive before declining? The labs only had my and my doctors details and this email is automatically generated when the lab submitted the claim.

Unless the labs submit it along with their claim.

I think they should pay for EVERYONE to have unlimited tests. This is a global disaster of historical proportions - it will be in the history books, not the common cold.

I don’t know the process of it. But I got an email stating that they will pay for the testing of positive. Perhaps you pay first once you get the results you can claim it back if positive.

I think They do offer unlimited testing. You just have to test positive or contract covid after you recover again. Personally I agree with discovery I wouldn’t like people testing unnecessarily. This year gonna be tough and I expect the inflation increase be higher. Having a lax testing policy is also hurts the members in the end as well. So I guess it’s all about balance.

It’s also puts pressure on hospitals if discovery or any other insurance gives unlimited paid testing even when results are negetive. If there’s a backlog in testing results. The people in hospital will have to wait longer in the undetermined zone before they move then to the appropriate zones.

Hi. This is not true. From the 1 June, discovery will cover two screening tests for covid 19 in a single year irrespective of the result. For health care workers, they cover 4 tests. I did mine last week and it was paid for. I don’t have medical savings. You have to do the online screening and be referred by a network GP. https://www.discovery.co.za/corporate/covid19-extended-benefits-across-health-insurance
How long did you have to wait for the PCR results from being tested?
