Discussion on rogue debit orders

I'll start...

From the article:
And now for the really good news - before the year is out, before any early debit order is processed, the account holder must have given authorisation, electronically, indicating they agree.
And in time that process will be put in place for ordinary debit orders, too.

That is true - PASA, banks and the payments processing companies are working on this but I highly doubt that they will be done by the end of the year.
Also, this only affects early debit orders (EDO) and not EFT debit orders.

Ok lets discuss. A friend of mine mentioned that his bank was unwilling to help reverse or cancel the rogue debit orders. This guy had debit orders cancelled with this company many years ago and they recently started deducting from his account again since they already had his banking details.

There should be a double opt-in option for debit orders. Apart from that, I am eliminating all debit orders and no one has my new banking details, I keep the old account open for the one debit order left.

I've had a company debiting a small amount from my account without my consent, opened a new bank account when the bank said they couldnt stop it.

which bank is this? Im sorry, but that is an utterly crap bank. I am with Standard Bank who I think are utter rubbish, but at least there is no long stories or excuses when it comes to unauthorised debit order reversals. Its always done, with no questions asked.
