I recently upgraded my ADSL to 1024 from 512, and as I was expecting I saw no real difference, telkom's DSL just doesn't perform, not saying the line speed was slow, but the bandwidth available just doesn't allow a person to take advantage...

Anyways so now I want to downgrade, guess what, its going to cost me R262 or so, but upgrading is free. After speaking to the technician, he says its just a software change on the system and takes a minute or so.

WHY MUST I PAY R262 FOR TELKOM TO CLICK A DROP DOWN BOX AND SELECT 384.

Burn in hell Telkom!

They want you to keep your DSL 1024. They want more money from you and as much as possible from other consumers as well...

Hey Donaldza!

If I may give you some advice. If you have to pay that amount, just pay it and get it over with because it'll save you money in the months to come.

But instead of changing it to 384, get 192. The reason being that because ADSL is a shared service, there will be very little difference between the two. I mean look at international on a 512 vs international on a 384 there is like 2% diffences and the latency is the same. Thus I think 192 is a good deal (R70 /month less) , because if there is not enough water in the tower, why buy a thick pipe when a thin one will get you the same amount.

Besides if you downgrade to 192 and change your mind, the hop to 384 is free.

do i make any sense?

The past two weeks has been really bad tho and i just think that there is not enough bandwidth available atm, and all these peering problems and sat3 issuses and SAIX issues are proof of the poor quality of service.

You guys scare me. I ordered my 1024 adsl today?

I need speed and iBurst can't deliver (long story). What other options do I have?

actually 384 is the best option currently. while there may be a very slight difference between 384 and 512, there is a bigger difference between 192 and 384. downloads on 192 max out at about 30-35kB/s, while downloads on 384 max out at 45-55kB/s. i'm actually considering upgrading mine to 384

personally I really like my 1024 adsl. I get great speeds downloading- speeds which fully utilise my maximum potential. Downloading torrents locally is awesome when i can get a tv episode in roughly 1 hour. But i do agree, if its a choice between 512 and 384, 384 is the better option. 192k just plains sux ito speed! rather get 384k!

Don't worry you have a few months before anything concrete happens :D

agreed!

I dropped back down from 1024 to 512 ... but will not go any lower as the 256 k up of the 512 line beats the 128k up of the 384 line ... which will help in any realtime apps such as gaming or skype ... mainly skype :)

the connection speeds are very intermittent - not every1 runs on the exact speeds as such.

firstly the crappy part of 1024 is that it only has 256 upload which is very weak considering in some cases that uploading is a priority over downloading.

some run adsl for months or even years without having problems , where others are flooded with $hit...

we are all pawns in the great game that is adsl..
