I have some computer equipment I want to get rid of. There are some computer recycling companies. Does anyone know of such a place in Cape Town?

What is it you're trying to get rid of? SPCA would probably take older stuff that still works.

It is so old I can't remember. :) Anyway, I switched it on

Celeron 850Mhz
256Mb RAM
10Mb network card
SiS 6326 video card
40Gb HD, 3.5" stiffy drive, CD-ROM drive
Win98, Keyboard, Mouse

All the above is not 'dead' but does not look to be reliability. I had to boot about 10 times with the machine getting stuck at different points. May just be a RAM problem.

15" CTX monitor (working)
HP 520 inkjet printer (working)

EPSON LX-850 printer (working, but case is damaged and buttons work only intermittently)

There's a place in Wynberg, called Footprints. They take and recycle old computer equipment. I had some stuff at my ex job that I wanted to take there, as we were just around the corner, but I never got a chance to.

You could always try selling that to a museum :p

Why not donate to a local school? I know alot have worst pc's than that.

Just off the top of my head they can be used as balistc missiles when thrown off bridges at taxi's or any other non yellow emergancy lane drivers :D

Check out these people: Desco. Mind your eyes. Site is very funky :D

They seem to have a bin at Mako Ottery with one pending at Milnerton.

burn it :D lots of pretty colours... and hey, if you lucky, you might just get a little explosion!!! ha ha ha. maybe try "cash crusaders"?

do these people pay?
I dropped all my stuff off at a company in Montague Gardens (can't remember the name but they were on one of the lists). They don't pay but neither do they make you pay for disposing it.

Desco

Hi

I work at Desco. We do pay for what is brought to us.

I saw comments about people saying why not donate.

I want it to bring it to the attention of those who think it is safe to donate any old electronics to anyone.

First of all electronics such as monitors are actually highly toxic once the tube is broken. We want to keep the monitors and other types of electronics from landing up in landfills. If these items land up in a landfill or just get dumped somewhere and the tubes break, there is a possibility of these metals such as lead getting into water tables. This is not good if a water table becomes toxic it can cause serious harm if not death.

Lead is only one of the materials found in a CRT monitor. There is something like 15 types of materials in CRT monitors, which is why we do not actually pay for them, but we do have them disposed of in the correct manner.

People only see what they can get out of it money wise. This should not be the issue. People should be thinking about how they can keep the environment safe and do their bit to ensure that their old equipment does not land up in the wrong places. Getting the money for it is a bonus.
