South Africa.
You would at least expect faster speeds than the ISDN. I have not yet experienced the WOW! of ADSL speed. We must get better speed service for the high monthly expense.

It all boils down to lack of competition.

Telkom are the only friggin' telecommunications company in South Africa. They have no opponents, so what is the point of actually *TRYING* to improve. They're making a heck of a lot of money out of ADSL, and I reckon they will milk it till it's dry.

I'm trying to see if Telkom are offering some sort of exchange. I'd rather get 128K ISDN + R7 Weekend than only being able to surf local sites because of a stupid international cap.

3 world country.. yeah, thats us!

Hi RadRadFord. I must agree with you that competition is the thing that will make things better. Logically thinking there is no incentive for them to improve anything. That's maybe why this forum exists. You can probably think of any media related thing and Telkom will be sponsoring it. The TV and radio and the works are always full of Telkom adverts and I don't know why they are advertising on the scale they are advertising on. It's not like people really have a choice when it comes to telecomunications.

Having competition will not necessarily change much.

Telkom still owns the infrastructure, and any competition will have to "hire" it from them (at Telkom prices, with Telkom continuing to support it), until an alternative infrastructure can be put in place.

And that will cost us a lot in the initital stages of putting that in place.
Unless the cellphone networks are going to provide affordable Internet in the future, be prepared to wait for a while.

There already is an existing alternate infrastructure. Transtel and Eskom have their own plus MTN was willing to allow one of the SNO bidders to use their available cell bandwidth.
ALthough from what I have read, there is a possibility that we wont be getting the SNO so soon. Check this link:

As per usual the "Independant" consultants are slamming both proposals. This means if they feel that they arent up to the task then we have to wait AGAIN. ICASA my AR**

At least this article makes things look positive:
