I think the post by Tim the Techxpert just about wraps it up so I don't think to much harm was done.

Telkom simply don't hang wire over roads, which means he was probably just laying new wire on your block, not all the way from the exchange. They carry a fair amount of wire with them, but nowhere near 2.4km/s....

Next time you take a drive around your block, see if you can spot telkom wires hanging over the road. I doubt it.

Anyway, just sour grapes that I'm unlikely to get more than my 6MB on my dodgy line

In Parkhurst they hanged Telkom cables crossing the roads at a few places where the cable going underneath has no more available pairs or is too badly damaged. One got pulled down not too long ago by a removals van. Most probably sticking a band aid where a small problem will be too expensive to fix.

I've only ever seen last mile cables suspended over roads. But even then nothing major, as the cable hang will be way too much.

It was simple, I wasn't getting anywhere with my original line, it was syncing G.DMT, bad attenuation and SNR, and simply put, I had enough and wanted it fixed. I ordered a second line, which when the guy pitched up here the one day said, there wasn't any extra lines, he need to lay extra lines before he can finish the install. I told him that is fine by me, I have the whole day. He drove off only to be seen later the day going into all the houses down the road asking for access to put the line on all the poles.

At the end of that day, I had a new line, new tel# and it was syncing at excellent SNR and Attenuation values AND ADSL2+. Cancelled the other line the next day, as it was the end of my problems with my line.

As the crow flies 1km apparently the line is 4.8km.
I struggle to get 3.2 Mbps. Before the upgrades I was continually getting 6-7Mbps.
Telkom make statements and promises they can't keep or make into reality this stems from their government I presume and it seems to be sn accepted norm.

Cannot possibly be 4.8km for you. It should be way less.
