Hello everybody! So I found my nearest Telkom exchange on Google Maps a while back, and I tried to work out how far it is from me to check if I'm getting the ping/speeds I should be getting.
I worked out that the closest route via road from me to the exchange is 4.1km, and I worked out that the distance as the crow flies is 1.6km.

Which one do I use? Do Telkom lines only follow roads? :/

The reason I ask this is because I want to get 10mb/s, but I am worried that I will only get 4mb/s if I really am 4.1km away!

noob question I assume a telkom exchange is one of those blue box things on the side of the road where most lines converge, all is it placed under ground with the fiber and copper cables

Not really. The green and blue box connects all the users in the vicinity, which then connects to the physical exchange, which will then connect to a DPSU. An exchange is usually in a building of sorts.

You can find a list of exchanges here: http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/maps/ or do a search for an exchange in your area.

Im just short of 5km away and my max sync is 6144kbps/650kbps - but in bad weather it drops to around 5500. To have my line stable at all times i sync at 5120/512.

I don't get it, the longest route from me to my exchange is 2,5km. It is 10meg enabled yet I can barely sync at 5. If it rains my line becomes unstable as all hell. My uncle who is at best 2,5km away syncs perfectly to the same exchange.

My telephone number search says the connected Exchange is 23Km away... Can't be right. I have a 2Mb line that can be 4Mb upgraded if I wish.

It can be right if you are on a UMC but unlikely .

Im having the same question as the OP on the broadbandstats site it says Im connected to WBLX:03 but telkom checkadsl says Im connected to WBLX:04 so Im not sure if that make a difference, via road my exchange is apparently 2km away but my attenuation is reall high at 44.5dB
