Hi guys

I know this is my first post here so please bear with me.

In any event I moved ISP's from Telkom and then requested to have the line upgraded to 10Mbps up from 4Mbps. After waiting for literally 28 days, I have been told that this will be impossible; being told that according to Telkom I was too far from the exchange to have 10Mbps supported. Now this threw me for a loop because I have a friend that lives across the road from me, (about 100m), that is enjoying the fruits of 10Mbps so it makes no sense that I am completely unsupported.

After spending about 2 hours being shifted about by the Telkom customer support team, (and being told blatant misinformation by one of their team), I finally ended up speaking to man whom told me the exact nature of the problem.

Apparently the Distribution Point Box that my line connects to doesn't support 10Mbps; it only supports a maximum of 4Mbps. I also spoke to a woman afterwards who had more information about the matter and she told me that if the DP Box doesn't support it; then that's it. According to her there is absolutely no way to solve this problem which could possibly affect people beyond just me. I am just wondering has anyone else experienced a problem like this and how did you go about dealing with it? Or is this an insurmountable problem and I must accept that no matter what, I still can't get anything close to the "Premiere" broadband internet services of the country.

Thank you for your time in advance.

PS. I live in Centurion if that means anything.

Hi,

Yes your exchange is too far, so they didn't lie!
maxSupportedExchangeSpeedKb: 4696

There isn't much you can do, unless they upgrade the infrastructure for new developments/higher speeds.
This they do on their own time.

How can a DP not support speed? As far as I know, a DP is just that : a point where a main cable get split into smaller feeders/cables, simply put, a aggregation point. All of it just wiring, nothing special or electronic. Unless a DP is not a DP, or a spade is not a spade no more?
