my s.o. is a public school teacher and i can tell you why my s.o. and other teachers like her do not spend more time teaching and must give out more homework.

My wife was a teacher (JP + Remedial). I made her quit as she was too stressed out and it was impacting our lives. Read my follow up post about lack of discipline.

Damn morons cannot pass anyways. Should just stop schooling and send them off to be miners and domestics or unemployment cheque collectors.

If the teachers are weak or not teaching everything they are supposed to during a particular lesson, whatever the reason, then homework does not provide a solution for any, but the smarter pupils or those that have well educated parents who can provide the tuition themselves. If children could work all this out for themselves we could close all the schools or make them simply places where you regularly hand in your work. At least that way maybe some children could spend time learning the way children naturally learn and having a childhood.

Ultimately the onus is on those claiming that homework is necessary and beneficial in early grades to prove their case.

Let me ask you, these geeks who get 47 A's each year? How is that possible? It could not be because they do tonnes of homework, and looking at pictures of them on tv and in the papers, they look like that are pretty decent looking people, to be really creepy pervery about it, some of those matirc girls look hot. And they study like crazy, play a couple dozen first team sports, are head girls and run soup kitchens for the old age. And you are suggesting that homework is bad.

Those would be those sad overachievers who have many awards and pieces of paper, but no childhood. No thanks.

Going to your parents for help is a last resort that should only be taken if you have been struggling for hours, it should happen so rarely that it shouldn't be a factor. It's your homework, you need to work it out. That's the whole point..

I think more targeted schooling is needed. Make use of those aptitude tests, and split high school in two. After grade 7, send the kid to a more specialized school that would help to develop his area of interest. After grade 10, re-evaluate and then the kid goes into even more specialization.

In this way the kids works towards something, and learns things that will have a bigger impact on his career path in future.

we actually had that with the technical schools like John Voster, the colledge system and the governmental system, but the new idiots in charge didn't understand it so that had to make it all one system, all in the name of liberation and retardation.

I went to a mixed technical and normal school. Best of both worlds

Another thing to consider is the number of "learners" in one class. That number should not be higher than 25, IMO.

I loathe that word "learners" - it makes judgements way too early. Not many of them "learn" anything.
