Hi Guys

I rented dive equipment from a dive shop over the December period to go diving in Mozambique.

The first day we went diving the mouth piece broke off (wasn't properly secured) of one set and while 30 meters down my GFs mouth piece also came out.

They now told us they would only give us store credit and not a refund.

Am I entitled to a cash refund? What steps do I need to follow from here?

Thanks for any help.

Not sure what steps to take but am interested in 'mouth piece' coming out at 30m. Please elaborate... Did the regulator detach from the tube? Confused. Sounds very fscking dodgy to me. Name and shame.

The regulator was fine it's the mouth piece that connects on to the regulator that came off - it's usually cable tied on.

Obviously my GF was freaking out as she got mouthfuls of water and rushed for my octo - once I calmed her down we had to go up cutting our dive short. We also had to rent equipment from the place in Mozambique to do our other dives.

The place we rented equipment from is Brightwater Scuba Centre in the Brightwater Commons Shopping Centre.

Okay, while not uncommon for the mouth piece to come off sometimes (pretty fscking scary at 30m I am sure0, for it to come off two sets out of two is pretty bad. It sounds to me as if they do very little gear inspection before they rent the stuff out. Seriously dangerous. Demand a refund!

Name and shame I say , you might even save a life. Why not rent from the resort?

It's cheaper to rent in Jhb than renting there. Now I know why.

Sorry - also forgot to mention that I couldn't inflate my BCD without holding the connector and pushing it against the clip as it had a space. (Yes it was clipped on correctly :P)

I would never rent gear from a dive school, if I have to rent I will only rent from the resort, even then I check the gear thoroughly myself

Stupid question here - these are life dependent items when scuba diving. Did you not check the equipment before you rented it?

And I agree with some other sentiment here - cash refund!

Meh,i've had cable ties fail. General wear and tear. Once I had a lovely comfy-bite mouthpiece go missing somewhere between CT and Joburg. Wouldn't be surprised if the ties were worn out so I always carry spares in my Tech pockets

We rented all the equipment on the basis that it had all been checked and cleared by a certified professional.
Apparently after every time they are rented they are rechecked to make sure they are fine to be rented again.

Heard that before... I just figure it is my life in a dangerous sport/hobby so I. Will check the equipment. Fortunately you guys are okay. I'm sure you will do things differently.

PS: I started a thread in Q&A you might be interested in :p

Don't know who trained OP. I was taught to check your equipment at all times and your buddy checks your equipment as well. These 4 day wonder dive courses are not good. Put Another Dollar In.

I think there's equally bad instructors irrespective of whether it's CMAS, PADI or NAUI

The fine line between money making and good training no matter the agency is getting more and more blurred as time goes on. I do agree on the quality of the instructor can lead to a good or bad experience. The days of doing at least 500 dives before going in to leadership programmes are long gone, I think 60 dives is all one needs today.
