Can anyone recommend a 42"+ TV that supports DivX HD via its USB?
I would like to bypass the whole multimedia player thing as I already have an external drive that is not being used.

Not a 42" but a 40" Samsung la40d550 should support it.

Alternatively you can look at a blu-ray player as your input source - that's what I do so that I can play the sound via my amp instead of via the TV. I'm not sure whether any TV or blu-ray will be able to play off a hard drive though - I think maybe only off a Flashdrive?

Samsung media play is quite good, plays just about everything including mkv, hd avi files are no problem.

+1. It's available in the LA40D550, not sure if it's available in the PS43D450 plasma (which would be better for DivX which are generally SD), can sometimes be had for R500 less than the 40" LCD, and the R500 could be put towards a mini HD media player that connects to an external hard drive/flash drive.

Lol PP never passes up an opportunity to promote plasma - he specifically says HD bro :D

Anyway most of the newer Samsungs, LGs and Sonys support it - just check out the specs. I'd recommend taking a DivX/XviD clip on a flash drive into a store and plugging it into the USB input of the various TVs and decide which one is best for you.

Hehe. Personally I've never seen a HD DivX rip, and when someone mentions DivX I associate it with SD.

So yeah, not even sure the Samsung/LG media players can play DivX HD. .mkv, definitely, which is the most common HD file to my understanding.

They were few and far between, but the amount of 720p DivX/XviD content is growing substantially to support playback on devices like Xboxes and PS3s. Seeing that most DivX/XviD HD movies are compressed to less than 4GB (due to the FAT32 restriction), it's even a viable alternative to those on slower line speeds who don't necessarily want to download a 7GB file.

Also, if a device can play a normal DivX/XviD file, then it will play DivX/XviD HD as the codec hasn't changed, just the resolution.

Thanks for that, good to know. Makes sense why people, especially in RSA, would prefer DivX. :)

On the basis that I don't think the PS43D450 plasma (direct competitor to the LA40D550 LCD) doesn't have a USB movie player, I would have to recommend the LCD for the OP.

I gotta ask the question... why??

IMO, H264 is far superior to DivX/Xvid at similar filesizes... and my samsung blu-ray player plays mkvs off ntfs drives without any issues... (and, I'd bet it does DivX HD too)...

Sure, but they're often not released at the same sizes. That's where the problem lies. 720p H264+MKV releases are usually much larger than 720p XviD+AVI releases.
