Just change the file extension from .divx to .avi.
DivX (not DivX Ultra AFAIK) uses the normal .avi container format.

I think it depends on where he wants to play the "new" avi file. But yes changing the file extension from .divx to .avi should work.

E.g. to play video files on my N73 I use a little program called Xilisoft 3GP Video Converter. Look it's nothing like using Virtualdub and the likes, but for odd video clip, its quite fast. I recently converted a whole episode of Prison Break for playback on the phone, and size was only about 180MB. Xilisoft can also convert your audio to AAC.
