Hi folks.

Whilst I have the whole tversity setup going it's a bit of a bitch on my laptop's resources to transcode on the fly, so i thinking of rather leaving my PC on overnight to convert all the divx files to wmv files.

So anyone know how long it'll take on average to convert say a standard 2 hour divx file to wmv. I know there's probably different factors to consider like my PC specs, the source file, etc... but how long would it take for a typical video?

Can anyone also recommend a good encoder(or is it transcoder?) to do the conversion?

Thats fricken awesome!! :D

  • Added H.264 video support: Up to 10 Mbps peak, Baseline, Main, and High profiles with 2 channel AAC LC.
  • Added MPEG-4 Part 2 video support: Up to 5 Mbps peak, Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC.

Is that the bit that essentially says divx will be supported?

lol I am not 100% sure really. I have just seen a lot of people saying Divx will be supported due to the new update...

I also presumed it was that little section

Honestly I dont see why it's taken them so long to support divx.

Even if there were licensing issues, surely they could've implemented some sort of codec download via live for those who want divx support.

Can anyone confirm that? Links?

Yip supports divx and xvid it seems, just reading up on MPEG-4 Part 2 and H.264.

That is frikken awesome!

There is a link up there that supports it... What isn't my dodgy blog good enough for you :D...

You need to be registered but from where I wrote "Click through to see the entire list in all it’s glory" is the official article just reposted.... It should be in quotes but it looked dodgy,

It would be if it were "MPEG-4 Part 2 video support: Up to 5 Mbps peak, Advanced Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC."

No advanced = no divX/Xvid
And only 2 audio channels...

ahhh *cries* didnt see that.

And I just started deleting my wmv's. ;)

O well, better start converting again.

Thats the information I was looking for :) So close yet so far :(

I'd say it's just an evolution thing. It's pie for them to add WMV support, they own it, but there's licensing and coding and all sorts to support the external codecs. Now that people take it seriously as a movie player, there's a lot more interest.

Once again, I urge everyone to email Major Nelson to question/force the issue. Do it NOW before it's too late: '[email protected]'

Major Nelson as in the husband in I dream of Jeanie?

I read somewhere that DivX is mainly used in pirating movies and their are very few legal distributors of DivX movies.... That would most probably be the reason why it is not supported.

But then one can just as easily burn DVDs or re-encode the movies as WMVs?

So if it really isn't gonna be supported, can you guys recommend a decent encoder?

Hmm, I don't think so, legally playback and encoding are not the same. I could probably legally rip my own DVD collection to Divx. (Probably in the US but theoretically SA copyright law may say otherwise)

I would think that the intention would be to allow it, I'm hoping we're just misreading things. Send emails!

heh heh, that's very likely where he picked up the tag :) If anyone doesn't know http://www.majornelson.com is an official blogger for the Microsoft Live team (I think he's on the content side), along with http://ozymandias.com/ (On the technical side) and http://gamerscoreblog.com/ which if I'm not mistaken is the official official blog of the Xbox team.
