Hi guys!

A friend of mine and I want to start up a tiny local ISP... Just for us and a few people in the area...

Safe to say, us and Telkom had more than one little falling out... Despite the lines being down constantly, and the oh so reliable service.

I'm looking into renting a fiber line.(There are 2 very close) And the routing will be done wirelessly through Ubiquiti Point to Point network(We're already going to put up the network for the CCTV system we're putting in...)

I want to know what I need to do on the distribution side of things... The Ubiquiti's UI has some throttling capabilities. I could manage it that way... Otherwise I need to use a server?

What do I need for an E-Mail Server?

I don't know...

Any advice?

My understanding is that if you want to sell services that cross public streets ( Which this would be if you plan to buy a fiber line and resell that bandwidth to your friends ) you need a license from ICASA. Also, you will need to find a fiber provider that is okay with you reselling their bandwidth, which a regular account, even a business one, will not allow.

If you get all that right, I'd suggest pfSense, it has some great routing and throttling capabilities.

Ok? And such a license from ICASA. How and where?

I'll look into that! Thanks!

We got 100mb/s fibre at my work and we spread it to many residents at a fee (enough to cover cost plus, a bit for maintenance and cover the cost of equipment). We put 40 residents on the network and all of them get between 10-20mb/s connection speed (alot of the speed falls off over wifi).

We had a company put it in for us which cost a lot (not gonna lie). The equipment they use also restricts too much use if one person is using to much or many people are on at a time.

So yes it is possible but if you phone your ISP they will tell you they have to install a line to every person house (they want the money).

Explain this?
