Whilst looking for lens hoods, I came across this site:
http://www.lenshoods.co.uk

They offer free downloadable PDF cut-out templates, which you then print out, and use to cut out cardboard lens hoods. It won't protect your lens as well as a proper lens hood, but it's a (very) cheap alternative if you just want to prevent flare.

Also, a little humour:

The purpose of $1000+ "Super Hoods" is to bend extraneous light around your camera; preventing lens flare and contrast fogging. This bent light then collapses on the Nikon shooting hack standing next to you; totally ruining his shot. It's been known to even crack the lens hoods of Nikon cameras in bright sunlight.

Its been posted here a few times but worthy of its own thread. I've made a few of them for some of my cheaper lenses that didnt come with one.

Not lens hoods but also D.I.Y camera related.

I made one and it really works great. Its not a tripod replacement but if you out and about you dont want to carry a tripod along. This really works.

Where did you get a 1/4" coarse threaded bolt from?

Mica maybe?

... if all else fails, I'm sure you can find one on the interwebz.
I've been to the hardware shop - No joy. I can get my dad to send one over next week but I want one now :o

You could probably also use those tripod quick release things that screw into the bottom of the camera, and then clip onto the tripod - It'll serve the same purpose - if you have an el-cheapo old tripod lying around.

I could but it would mean damaging the mount and I still want to be able to use it. :o

Silly country and their silly metric system :(

Mine has a small hollow half moon underneath that you use to screw the plate to the camera - thats why I thought of it - no damage done - I suppose it depends on the mount though.

Sorry for the late reply. Was away to the Drakensberg for weekend.

In Pretoria there is a place called Bolt & Nut in Silverton. They have any and every size of bolt you need.

Even in Garsfontein there is a place called Screwplate.

Good luck in your search
