So after getting my Telkom FTTH installed, I've decided to investigate the option of moving the home network nerve centre from the study downstairs to the storeroom upstairs. Currently everything is WiFi and with all the repeaters and boosters in the house things are getting out of hand. I want to lay all the network cables myself as the house is large and old and everything will have to be run outside on the roof (concrete slabs and double thick brick walls ) - I think that getting a contractor to do this would cost R10k +.

I don't foresee this as being a "major" task as I would just follow the existing TV cables entry into each room (actually it will be a big project but stuff like this excites me). Biggest headache would be widening or creating new entry points through the walls into the rooms and guiding the cables in.

My only issue is that Telkom has already installed the fibre and terminated it in the study downstairs. I've done some rough measurement and it appears that there's enough slack on the fibre to reach the new destination upstairs. If I was to move the termination endpoint, what contractor can I get to reslice the fibre? Telkom technicians () or a private contractor? And how much would this cost?

Also if there are any guys out there who've done this before I would really appreciate some tips and tricks. For example where is the best place to purchase all the goodies, and maybe a rough estimate on how much this will all cost me. This will include a Gigabit switch, patch panel and all the necessary tools. Trying to figure out if it's worth going solo or getting a contractor and thus whether it's even worth going this route. Thanks!!

Firstly why don't you request a indoor transfer from Telkom? They should be able to give you pricing on that. This is going to be cheaper than to get a third party company to resplice the fibre for you, not to mention the risk of breaking the fibre core while rerouting it, which is then your problem.

Secondly what is your current budget, requirements for the network in terms of speed, features and size constraints for the kit?

If i were you i'd just go powerline adapters.

I've had lots of success with these and each one has integrated wifi.
