A radio DJ suspected of killing his girlfriend was arrested in Soweto on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.

"We had been searching for him since last week. He was arrested today for murder," Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

The 32-year-old girlfriend was stabbed several times and locked in a flat in Jabulani, Soweto, on June 29.

Th man apparently phoned the woman's friend and confessed to killing her, police said at the time.

The man is a presenter at Soweto-based community radio station, Jozi FM.

Police offered a R50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

Makhubela said he would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court soon.

MURDER ACCUSED DJ ARRIVES AT COURT

A radio DJ accused of killing his girlfriend arrived with police ahead of his appearance at the Protea Magistrate's Court in Soweto on Thursday.

He wore a grey hooded jacket and jeans and hid his face from the flashing cameras of photographers.

Police escorted him to the holding cells to await his appearance.

He was arrested on Tuesday. His 32-year-old girlfriend was stabbed several times and left in a locked flat in Jabulani, Soweto, on June 29.

The man, who had been on the run for over a week, apparently phoned her friend and confessed to killing her, police said at the time.

The man is a presenter at Soweto-based community radio station, Jozi FM.

DJ'S MURDER CASE POSTPONED

A radio DJ accused of killing his girlfriend appeared briefly in the Protea Magistrate's Court, Soweto, on Thursday.

Donald Sebolai, 37, was charged with murdering his 32-year-old girlfriend Rachel Dolly Tshabalala.

Wearing a grey hooded jacket and jeans, he stood attentively in the dock while magistrate Herman Badenhorst read the charge to him.

"You are charged with premeditated murder, which is a schedule six offence, for which you could get a life sentence if convicted," Badenhorst said.

In terms of six of the Criminal Procedure Act an accused must show exceptional circumstances exist to justify their release on bail.

Prosecutor Tebogo Lesebo said the State was waiting for a post mortem report and statements from more witnesses.

Sebolai was arrested on Tuesday after being on the run for over a week.

Tshabalala was stabbed several times and left in a locked flat in Jabulani, Soweto, on June 29.

Sebolai is a presenter at Soweto-based community radio station, Jozi FM.

Tshabalala's relatives were in court to observe proceedings. The family would not comment further on the case as they were in mourning, said the woman's brother-in-law, Aubrey Tshabalala.

Badenhorst postponed the case to July 16 for further investigation.

DJ'S GIRLFRIEND HAD 'HORRENDOUS' WOUNDS

Dolly Tshabalala, the murdered girlfriend of radio presenter Donald Sebolai, suffered serious stab wounds on her genitals, the Protea Magistrate's Court heard on Wednesday.

"She was stabbed in her private parts. I attended when the post mortem report was presented," investigating officer Constable Oupa Khubeka said at Sebolai's bail application.

"The stab wounds start from the genitals to the right thigh, these were deep wounds that showed the amount of violence that took place."

Magistrate Herman Badenhorst read an excerpt from the post mortem report.

"It says here, three penetrating wounds on the middle line, deep and extends into the root of the right thigh... penetrating wounds to the pubis," Badenhorst said.

Sebolai allegedly stabbed Tshabalala in his flat on June 29.

The state is opposing bail.

Khubeka said: "He is facing a very serious charge, and the amount of violence exerted on the deceased was horrendous."

He said Sebolai was arrested on July 8 in Dube, Soweto after being on the run for nine days.

Police flagged down a vehicle Sebolai was travelling in with his brother-in-law. An informant tipped off police about his whereabouts soon after a R50,000 reward for his arrest was announced.

The two were headed to Pretoria, after which Sebolai would skip the country into Botswana, he said.

Sebolai does not have a passport.

Sebolai's lawyer Malise Rambelani argued his client was not on the run but was on his way to hand himself over to the police on the day he was arrested.

"He also packed clothes because he knew he would need clothes for his appearance in court," said Rambelani.

So in his plea this DJ claims it was an accident while they were fighting over the knife. Must have been watching OP's trial.
 
'BLOOD WIPED OFF,' COURT HEARS

Blood had been wiped off the floors in the flat where Dolly Tshabalala was found stabbed to death, the Protea Magistrate's Court heard on Wednesday.

"The deceased was found in a pool of blood on the bed. The bed was in order, but the place appeared cleaned up. There were visible blood stains left behind on the lounge and bedroom floors," said investigating officer Constable Oupa Khubeka.

The incident happened at 5.30am on June 29.

The murder accused, Donald Sebolai, called Tshabalala's best friend, Nonhlanhla Mkhize that morning and told her he had killed Tshabalala, said Khubeka.

"Mkhize went to the Jabulani police station and informed the police who accompanied her to the flat. The doors and windows were closed. Police asked a caretaker to use the spare key and open the door to the flat." Paramedics certified her dead at the scene.

A neighbour told police that Tshabalala was seen around 10am loading what looked like clothes into his girlfriend's car, he said. Sebolai did not own a vehicle.

"The vehicle was found dumped on the same day in an open veld in Central Western Jabavu. Police found a bloodstained steak knife in the car and many clothes loaded in the back seat, including his shoes."

Tshabalala's pyjama pants, her gown and a towel, all blood soaked, were found in the vehicle.

The clothing and the towel were taken for DNA analysis, Khubeka said.

Tshabalala kept wiping his face and shaking his head in the dock as he listened to proceedings.

He wore a green sweater and blue hand gloves.
