My modem won't comment to the internet! Telkom are being particularly useless as they've reset my line and assure me there's no problem on their side. I'm trying to connect to their Guest account so that they can't blame my ISP.

The modem lights all come on and turn green except the Internet light which remains solid red!

Is my modem fried? I can hit the web GUI via my network.

If the Internet light stays red, then it means that the router cannot establish a PPPoE connection.
The DSL light implies that your router is connected to the DSLAM and synchronized at whatever speed profile you have at Telkom (eg. 384kbps/512kbps/4-10Mbps).

You can read here on how to configure the PPPoE connection. You'll just have to replace the username and password with your ISP's password.

Once the Internet light goes on (not red) then your Internet should work. If it isn't, then you still have to verify your ADSL line: http://www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl

THANK YOU!!

My VPI was set to 0.

It still doesn't explain why it stopped working in the first place. It just stopped. And when I was fiddling and reset things the VPI must have reset to a default of 0.

Now it's all back to normal. Briding to the wireless-N Dlink router and all the home gadgets are very happy again.

Thank you very much :)

Hi Pada,

MWEB contacted me yesterday to tell me that my all in one uncapped account was ready to use and technical support guided me trough the setup untill I arrived to the same situation as described by silentbee, ie all led green except for internet led red.
We tried with the guest telkom user and password without succes
MWEB then said they can't see wether the modem or the line is faulty and logged a default at Telkom just in case.
The problem is I cannot test the modem on another line
I also followed the instructions on the post "Modem settings for MWEB" (which match the instructions from the MWEB hotline) to no improvement,

here are detail of the diagnostics, can someone tell me if I can deduce which of the modem or the line is faulty from that?
Thanks

Try using the Telkom guest account details:
Username=guest@telkomadsl
Password=guest

If that doesn't work, then you should ensure that your ADSL line is activated. If your ADSL line isn't activated yet, you'll probably synchronize at strange speeds and not at the speeds for which you're paying. You can do this by going to http://www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl

Those diagnostics on the D-Link modem are pretty useless. The important ones are:
"Test ADSL Synchronization" - indication of your connection status between your ADSL modem and the Telkom DSLAM
"Test authentication with ISP" - indication of whether it was able to log in on your ISP account using a PPPoE connection
"Ping primary Domain Name Server" - if this is off, then you might have Internet connectivity, but your browsing wouldn't really work, since it can't resolve hostnames to IP addresses. Like if you enter www.google.co.za, it can't resolve that hostname.

Here's how my D-Link DSL-2500U is configured for an Adept (Internet Solutions) account - these pages are when you go to Advanced Setup -> WAN -> Add/Edit:

Hi Pada
thanks for the feedback.
I tried with the telkom guest account with the same results (ie no results).
re diagnostics:
- "Test ADSL Synchronization": this one is a "PASS"
- "Test authentication with ISP": also "PASS"
- "Ping primary Domain Name Server" : also "PASS"
so from what I understand, this means the line should be working right and that the modem is in sync, right?

"If that doesn't work, then you should ensure that your ADSL line is activated. If your ADSL line isn't activated yet, you'll probably synchronize at strange speeds and not at the speeds for which you're paying"
here is what I get from the "device info" panel in the config menu of the router"
This information reflects the current status of your DSL connection.
Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps): 1023
Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps): 10015
LAN IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Default Gateway:
Primary DNS Server: 192.168.1.1
Secondary DNS Server: 192.168.1.1

if I ordered a 4mb line, shouldn't the upstream line rate be higher?

The problem I have with the "verifyadsl" page is that I am not sure I have a correct order number from telkom as I ordered an all in one package from MWEB. Still, they sent me a sms with a 6 digit number to use as "telkom order number", so I gather this should be it. But when I run the test with my landline number and this order number, I invariably get the same message:
Confirmation Message
Your request for ADSL verification was sent.
Error: Your request for ADSL failed.
Your DN number and your order number are unknown.
Please try again.

and I do not know whether this means the line is faulty or it could not run the test

sorry, the screenshots are too blurry for me to read, do i do something wrong (beside clicking on the link and trying to read)?

When your ADSL line is not verified yet, you would only be able to access the Telkom websites and nothing else.
Also, the Telkom guest account would only give you access to Telkom websites.

Seeing that the Telkom guest account passed on those 3 diagnostic tests, it seems like you have a problem with your Mweb account.

Unfortunately I'm not sure about how to proceed since you ordered your ADSL through Mweb. My suggestion would be that you contact Mweb or MWEB Guy.
My guess is that your login details are incorrect for your MWEB account or that your account is locked in on a wrong telephone number.
