DNS 323 lost files after power failure

My customer uses a DLink DNS 323 with 2 * 1TB hard drives in RAID1 as a file server. After a lightning strike we have this strange problem. The NAS looks like someone did a factory reset on it. All the files are gone everything is fine, even the UPS it was connected to. I am busy using Disk internals Linux reader and Recover my Files on the one hard drive to try and get files back. I opened the other hard drive with Active @ Partition and it shows 3 partitions on the drive and on the 3rd partitions are all the folders I created for the users but I can’t access any files, it also shows the drive as full. I also had the drive in my Ubuntu pc but it could not access any files.

I need some urgent help as the drives contain drawings for a fairly large construction they are busy with.
 
Lots of details but conflicting/confusing

You say you can see the folders but can't access files,can you see the files? Are you getting errors accessing them? Was this NAS domain/workgroup joined or did it have a custom username/password to access files?
 
It was suppose to be the backup drive and the stuff that was stored on it was backed up to another pc but some drawings was not backed up

I can see the folders when using Active @ Partition to look at the drive, but cant access it through Disk internals Linux reader or through Ubuntu. Recover my files can read / recover the files but it is taking for ever (scan been running for 2 days and not half way yet)
I can access a Linux swap volume and a Linux ext volume but not the volume with the data it just says check the disk.(When using the Linux reader)It is in a work group and its own username passwords, if you log into the admin web page is does not show any users or details but if you go to Linux ext volume there are files that show the user names and passwords and access rights the file is called .smb.ses As I sai it looks like the drive did a factory reset
 
Sounds like the config reset,however the files have retained their old Samba permissions even though the Server has lost the accounts

Yep. You'll be able to see folders, but not the files.

A Linux guru should be able to help you with setting file and folder permissions.
 
3 ideas

1)mount in linux then CHOWN and CHMOD the partition to try to replace the permissions

2) SMBCACLS to remove the access list off the files

3) Do a manual samba config and force a new user and group on the shares,restart samba. Should theoretically replace the permissions
 
I have contacted someone that knows linux like the back of his hand, it will be a safer bet. thanks for the help so far
 
OK he reconstructed the RAID and mounted the drive on his Linux box and copied it over to my external drive.

He charged me R1500 to recover the data. I was very curios to find out how and spend some time to Google it some more, now that I had a copy of the data I could play with the drives, I will share the fix here in the hopes that it will help someone else

sudo mdam --assemble --run /dev/md0 /dev/sdc1
sudo mount /dev/md0 /mnt/recover

R750 a line and you thought coke was expensive

More like:

R30 for line one
R30 for line two
R1460 for knowing what commands to use

;)
 
true true , once I had the data of I could hack at it until I could figure it out.
Next time I will know how to. Strange how something is hard until you know the answer.
