The problem started suddenly last night and is continuing today. It is affecting the same sites on all browsers (opera, chrome, slimjet, IE) and all devices (phone, tablet, laptop and PC) so I'm assuming something to do with Telkom rather than being a local issue.

Anyway selected websites return a DNS unresolved error. Started with just two I regularly use last night (Reddit and a Go Fund Me page) but now NY Times and The Guardian won't open either.

I tried a DNS flush on my Chrome browser but that didn't help. I also turned off and restarted my modem.

Any other suggestions? Or do I just wait it out?

This is the error:

This site can’t be reached

www.reddit.com’s server DNS address could not be found.
DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN

Dlink Router by any chance?

Yes, if you change it on your Router it will change everywhere.

If it's a DLink router it might be related to a dodgy firmware that opens it up for hacking.

Definitely a TI problem as we are seeing it across a variety of routers. Switched all TI sites to alternative ISP accounts early this morning and will test again after 17:00.

Edit: at times like this I really miss rangers input

I didn't bother with mucking about with the router, just changed it in Windows which was pretty quick and simple. Didn't bother with my tablet because I don't use it that much for going online and can wait out the error.

I am using OpenDNS would you recommend the google DNS setting over this?

Happening with me too, suuuper annoying. When they fix it should we switch the DNS back or is it fine to leave it as is?

If googles DNS is working for you it's fine to keep it. Gamers generally prefer an ISPs DNS servers as they usually get better overseas latency with them.

deddit

The people hosting reddit.com are having some kind of trouble - also affecting 9gag. The underlying services are fastly.net and "awsdns". They have messed something up at NAP and internationally - probably their experienced guy left, and the new guy is running around trying to figure it out. The fastly DNS servers are somewhat unreachable locally. The replies given for international DNS queries are good, but for local DNS queries, they point to servers that just don't work.

yeah only today we seem to be getting awesomely slow service as well so I'm thinking that the problem started with the DNS servers and has spread wider today. I don't believe in coincidences.

Pretty sure that's incorrect. DNS would just resolve the name > IP the first time, after that it wouldn't matter as you'd keep sending/receiving packets from the same server.

@OP from Afrihost thread:
Been seeing a couple of complaints about Reddit this morning. We've reported it to our NOC Team and they're investigating, but it appears to be a DNS configuration issue on the Fastly CDN (Reddit side). It appears to be affecting everyone that breaks out at NAP. That's all I know at the moment. :(

Switching to Google DNS will solve this, but isn't recommended unless you reaaaally need to get your Reddit fix. ;)

TI DNS servers seem to resolving OK now and latency looks normal, have you cleared cache?

True, but the extra 8ms to 8.8.8.8 in my case would usually get a gamer twitching for some reason ...
