I've noticed that when connecting my ADSL account a number of times the DNS server assigned to me (don't have the IP on me, I think its 196.25.16.254) does not function meaning that internet connectivity is disrupted. If I leave it alone for 15min or so and reconenct I still get the same DNS server but this time it works.

Now if I change from DHCP and physically specific my IP address, gateway etc. and set the DNS to 196.25.1.1 (haven't tried 196.25.11.1) then my connection works fine.

Question: Has anybody else got this problem and if so why is Telkom assigning a buggered up (possiblty overloaded?) DNS server to ADSL connections. I'm getting sick and tired of having to manually set my settings (given that bloddy IP changes constantly) and it might be my imagination but 196.25.1.1 seems to have a much faster resolve time (occasionally I have to wait for a couple of seconds for a site to "kick in" when using 196.25.16.254).

Anybody else experiencing this?

You can leave the IP on automatic and still set your DNS manually.

Yup, I've been experiencing the exact same problem with DNS.

The "automatically assigned DNS servers" occassionally stop resolving my DNS requests making browsing and everything unavailable, then 5 minutes later they're working again. I'm in the habit of manually assigning them (until these servers give me grief as well) and then later switching back to the automatically assigned DNS servers.

I always manually specify DNS servers...

use 192.43.1.11 as your primary as .25 is a caching only server... it's always much more reliable.

You mean 196.43.1.11.

Thanks, I'm going to give that a go.

Do what i do, add all 4 or more to the list, that way if one dies/takes long it goes to nxt in list. I did that once and haven't have probs except when i switched the slot of my network card and it defualted back to auto.

I'm having similar frustrations with 196.25.1.1 and 196.25.1.9

Seems as if Telkom is falling apart at various places...

Making 196.43.1.11 (like Carlhead mentioned earlier) the primary DNS and .25 the secondary seems to have sorted out my problems at least for now it appears to be more stable.
