DNS not resolving

Hi...

I'm tearing my hair out (whatever is left of it), because I can't figure out what is going on...

2 nights ago, got home, and my ADSL has stopped working. DNS does not resolve, but if I use a direct IP, websites open up (www.saix.net = 196.25.1.200).

So, yesterday I download the newest firmware for my Linksys WAG200G, update the router, reset to factory settings, and setup everything from scratch. Still not working.

We use a static IP system at work, and here at work DNS resolving works (with the same external DNS servers I've used at home), so it can't be my PC.

I've thought that it was my local firewall (Zonealarm), but even if I switch it off, no DNS resolves work at home.

If I use nslookup, and change server to the DNS servers I use (196.25.255.3 or 196.43.45.190) and try to lookup a site, it returns the correct IP address.

I've resorted (as a temporary solution) to put in the critical IPs into my 'hosts' file, at least then it resolves.

Managed to get hold of Telkom ADSL support after almost an hour on the line, and they've tested the line, and found nothing wrong with it.

Anybody else experienced something like this? Any ideas?

Is the DNS set on PC or ADSL router?

If on PC, make sure it is correct :D
If on router, two things:
Make sure PC DNS is set for the IP of the ADSL router.
Make sure the router can server DNS for the PCs IP - this is usually some form of check box that says something along the lines of "server DNS for remote IPs"

As a "dirty fix", make the PC dns server the one you changed to in nslookup.

DNS is set on PC. I've got 4 DNS servers set.
1 = Internal work DNS, 192.168.3.20
2 = Public DNS, 196.25.255.3
3 = Public DNS, 196.43.45.190
4 = Router IP, which should then pass on the DNS servers it get on logon.

I'll have a look at settings for the router to "serve DNS", but can't remember seeing anything like that, NOT even to mention the fact that I didn't change any settings.

:( :(

Have you got XP ?
Go Start>Run services.msc
DNS server . . set to automatic.

Then goto Start>Run CMD Enter.. type ipconfig /flushdns ENTER
.. type ipconfig /registerdns ENTER

Open a command prompt - > start , run , cmd , enter or ok , type in netsh winsock reset and it should work immediately otherwise run the command and reboot your computer.

This works on Windows Server 2003 R2 and Windows Vista , not sure if it works on XP

Anthropoid - DNS server is not listed... I'm running Win XP Pro..

Fismail, tried that, as well as "netsh int ip reset", which also had no effect.

I've at least eliminated the ADSL router (after buying another modem!!!). My mom's PC works fine via wireless, even with DHCP server running.

So I'm guessing my TCP is somehow corrupt? Any other ideas? Guess this can also be moved to the 'hardware support' forum, since it's not an ADSL problem per se...

Thanx.

Ok... So I've managed to find out that the network admins screwed everybody who connects to their own network at home...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\DNSClient] stores a value for DNS server from a group policy, and IPConfig command does not pick this up.

The only way it triggered in my mind was when I had set the network to DHCP address, and the NSLookup utility still came back with the internal DNS IP.

So, regedit, do a search for the ip, and change the value. And now my internet is FAST and FURIOUS. Have to catch up on a few downloads now, so thanx for everybody's help. :)
