DNS on LAN2

Hi all,

Is there someone out there that can help me:-

I'm using an international internet cafe software and they have an option for wireless billing whereby persons with wireless laptops / PDA's etc. can connect and then controlled via our "Server" - opening / closing / monitoring bandwidth etc.

The way they say that I need to connect all of this is as follows:-
- LAN1 (motherboard network) set to sharing
- LAN2 - default IP address of 192.168.137.1
- Linksys WRT54GL Router with IP Address 192.168.0.3 (changed from default 192.168.1.1 as my netgear router's network is 192.168.0.1 and this all needs to be on the same network)
- DHCP is disabled
- Connect LAN2 to Port 1 of Linksys (not the internat port) with network cable

What is supposed to happen is that when a customer connects to the internet and tries to browse, the DHCP will allocate an IP address to the wireless laptop, the LAN2 will act as a gateway to LAN1 Sharing for connectivity, they will pickup a "login" screen" which we then either issue a pre-paid ticket with login details, or, we open their session from the server.

I've got all of this connected perfectly but what I'm sitting with is the following:-
- SKype on the Wireless Laptop is on / works 100%
- Emailing via Outlook from the Wireless Laptop works 100%
- No Internet Connectivity
- I can enter Google's http: address and get the "Google" screen, but when entering "www.google.com" - "unable to connect" = I've been told that this means there is a DNS problem !!

Now, the internet monitoring software company don't tell me anywhere about inserting the following on LAN2:-
- a Default Gateway Address
- a Preferred DNS Address
- an Alternative DNS Address

Surely I would have to have these so that there is an Internet Connection ??
Where can I find these or what settings can I use ??

ANYONE OUT THERE WITH A D#MN ANSWER FOR ME AS THIS IS DRIVING ME BL*#DY CRAZY !!!

Thanking you boffins in advance.

Heinz

If the laptop on the wireless can email successfully, then that means DNS is working, unless the account settings for the email account has a IP address instead of a hostname in the outgoing/incoming server field. It also means the laptop can get onto the internet, which in turn also implies that the laptop's IP configuration is 100%.

Sounds to me like its the software that might be blocking certain ports.

If I could speculate, I'd reckon that you would have to either put the monitoring software in a transparent proxy mode, or that you might need to enter the proxy details manually into your internet browser, which could be a little more effective for troubleshooting purposes.

hope this helps

#1 What APP is running on LAN 2PC ?
#2 What is handing out DHCP addresses ?
#3 WRT54GL has a feature called 'intercept port 53', where it pushes its own DNS to all client machines - tried that ?

If the laptop on the wireless can email successfully(I need to double check that - now I'm not sure if this is correct - someone else did the emailing for me - they might have emailed form the server which is working 100%), then that means DNS is working(If the emailing isn't working, could this then mean it is a DNS problem?), unless the account settings for the email account has a IP address instead of a hostname in the outgoing/incoming server field. It also means the laptop can get onto the internet (it defintely dones't connect to the net - only skype works - thjat I know as I personally checked that), which in turn also implies that the laptop's IP configuration is 100%.

Sounds to me like its the software that might be blocking certain ports.

If I could speculate, I'd reckon that you would have to either put the monitoring software in a transparent proxy mode (Huh !! I'm really not clued up with all of this ... I can help myself up to a limit and then it all becomes like Greek to me) , or that you might need to enter the proxy details manually into your internet browser (are you talking about entering this into the wireless laptops of the customers? - if that's the case, then this whole system defeats the object as what is supposed to happen is that the customers are supposed to boot up, go into the internet browser and gain access to my wireless connection without me changing anything on their laptops etc.), which could be a little more effective for troubleshooting purposes.

hope this helps

#1 What APP is running on LAN 2PC ? (You talking about the 2nd PCI Network Card in the Server PC? Sorry, not too sure what you're asking?)
#2 What is handing out DHCP addresses ? (I'm under the impression it's the Linksys Wireless Router - am I wrong?)
#3 WRT54GL has a feature called 'intercept port 53', where it pushes its own DNS to all client machines - tried that ? (no, haven't. Will see ...)

I'll give it a bash. Can't access the Linksys Router at the moment but will try tomorrow morning.

Just want to ask you:- Is it then right that on LAN2 Settings, I have:-
IP Address = 192.168.137.1
Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway = blank
Preferred DNS = blank
Alternative DNS = blank

Set your preferred DNS as the Linksys IP, and then set the Linksys to intercept DNS traffic as I mentioned
I have sent you a reply on the PM - via EMAIL.
Last resort also add the Linksys as the gateway IP, but then verify that this does not bypass the cafe software
