I was busy testing a new PC router this afternoon on my iBurst and all was going great. Suddenly nothing works - pages won't load, email times out and my chats are acting really strange. Crap - what have I done now

So I spend an age trying to figure it out. DNS is no longer responding so I change to a different server - still no go. Pings to a couple of random IP's that I can remember out my head don't work. But yet Skype is still connected...

So I give up and reconnect the old router that I was using and what do you know - exactly the same problem. So it must have been iBurst all along. But Skype still connects... damn they made that thing robust!!

So - is anyone else having problems or is it just me? Currently on GPRS on my phone.

I usually connect to Rosebank iBurst...

ambo, I am also having major problems tonight .. from just getting nothing back from the servers, through to DNS errors .. I also rebooted the routers a couple of times, thinking that the problem is on my side

Same here - on Fourways. Most local sites seem to be resolving, Facebook is fine, but try to get to google and gmail.

Come on iBurst... Get your act together. Now if only I could get ADSL on my exchange...

Try using Open DNS settings...

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Had the same issue on Monday.

I suggest you also change your email server addresses (POP3 & SMTP) in your mail application to IP addresses instead of having it resolved by a DNS server, it speeds things up a bit, i.e. instead of using pop3.iburst.co.za ping the address and copy the IP to your mail application.

Thanks for the useful advice on openDNS settings who.is.michael!

How does it affect one by leaving it on these settings as opposed to using the iBurst recommended DNS settings? I just spoke to the helpdesk they admitted to having a problem but did not offer this advice.

Was having the same problem from about 16h00 this afternoon, those DNS settings solved it. Thanks :)

OpenDNS' servers are more reliable (practically no downtime) and resolves DNS queries far quicker, although their servers are located in San Francisco, USA – The only possible issue is when iBurst has no international connectivity, then you have no DNS server…

So the best solution would be to ping both the addresses (208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220) and choose the one with the lowest latency as your primary DNS server and use iBurst’s DNS server, (196.46.70.1 - Cape Town or 196.30.31.193 – Joburg) as your secondary DNS server.

Problem kinda solved….

Read some more... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dns

The only real solution would be to change your ISP, LOL.

OpenDNS (& who.is.michael for reminding me) FTW! I've set my WaRT running DD-WRT with the 2 OpenDNS addresses 'n then the itBust (again!) DNS 3rd; now not only do I have all my 'net services back, even with a .iso CD download regular browsing is still snappier than before I made the changes.

This truly sucks a$$
I have been trying to update a site specifically the adsense banners and no matter what I try I cannot get the ad to display! I have set the DNS servers to the OpenDNS IP's and currently I have SIX servers listed!!! two open dns, two iburst and two FreeDNS... nothing helps...

Guess its just another night wasted due to iBurst's ineptitude :(

Have you tried http://www.opendns.com/cache/ ?

Enter the website address and the code supplied - on the next page you have the opportunity to refresh the cache...

They have a message on their helpdesk phone, stating that they are experiencing problems and that it should be sorted out at around 22:00 tonight.

PS. This is their number, if you need to phone them. 0861 428 778

They even have issues on their their own web site as well. You cannot check your bandwidth at the moment and the incident web page doesn't load. There is probably more than just DNS issues with them.

The speed test to their backbone is unreliable as there is connectivity issues to the iBurst site so rather use:
