Hi Guys

I hope somone can give me some good advice here.
Basically I want to know can you have 2 host names in active diretory pointing to 1 ip address?

The reason I asked is we want to change the name of a server but untill I can get to all the users pc's and make the change to point to the new server name I dont want the others to have problems.

So I want to be able to go: \\oldservername or \\newservername and get to the same place..

I have added another A name in DNS for the new location but when I go \\newservername it prompts for a username and password which it shouldent?

Please help???

Thanks!

OptionalNames registry setting:
EXTRA NetBIOS NAME FOR SERVER
On the server, follow these steps to configure the OptionalNames
registry value:
a. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver
parameters
b. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Multi-String Value.
c. Type OptionalNames, and then press ENTER.
d. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
e. In the Value data box, type the NetBIOS names of the old servers
(oldserver1, oldserver2, and oldserver3)
each on their own line, and then click OK. This action registers the
names in Windows Internet Name Service
(WINS) for the server.
13. Restart the Server service on the server.

Hey Nick.

Any easy thing to accomplish. Using the DNS console in Windows Server 2003 simply create a CNAME record in your DNS zone. Type the new hostname of the server and the same IP address that you've always used.
