Hi All,

Some technical DNS Info, i tried to seach "DNS" on this forum but no results were found.

From my personal experience DNS settings are set to "Auto Detect" on ADSL Routers, which means that you plug it in enter ur ISP details and presto you have internet access. What i have noticed is that the DNS settings are TELSCUM's so...

If you are with another ISP (LIKe i am with IS) change ur DNS setting to "User Configured" or "Manual" and then enter ur respective ISP's upstream DNS server IP's.

The difference, on a speed tester like GAMCO, my 384 line now registers at 450.8 and on the Telkom Speed test its 187.2 just becoz now I dont have Telkoms DNS as my default so the Internet request is going to MY ISP and then straight to the Internet where as before i changed it it was going to my ISP then to Telkom's DNS then it figures out what to do.

For redundancy purposes i have entered 3 DNS server IP's to my Routers DNS list so that if the IS DNS servers go down, my Router will then look throught the table and then try the OTHER DNS server.

Hey just an observation, it works for me, use it don't use it.

Gamco:Your current bandwidth reading is:

450.80kbps
which means you can download at 56.35 KB/sec. from our servers.:D

Telkom:Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 21.791 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 187.2 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 22.9 (kiloBytes/second)

hey,

My thread is just suggesting that for for everyone using a non Telkom reselling ISP to try out the DNS settings for themselves to optimise their ADSL experience and for all users not to be take the Telkom speed as an authority on ADSL speed as once you have changed ur DNS settings you are not directly using Telkoms DNS servers anymore so there will be an extra jump that your browsing requests will need to do.

sorry, didn't mean to be rude (if it sounded that way)!

When you enter a domain name in your browser (www.google.co.za), you pc sends UDP packet to the DNS server requesting a IP address (4 byte value unique on the internet). the server responds with a UDP packet containing the ip address for the domain name (216.239.59.147). windows caches this value for x seconds, so when you go to www.google.co.za after 2 minutes, your pc doesn't have to send the request again.

so if you speed up DNS requests, browsing will be faster (visiting many diffrent domain names), but when downloading (like the speed test), only one DNS request is sent.

the reason your speed test was faster was probably because it was cached by your browser when you went back to the site. try and change your DNS servers back to auto and do the test again.

hope this helps!

hey no worries, yeah i know how the DNS requests work and i expected the result from the Telkom side...im not really interested in the Telkom speed test more into optimised internet browsing.

Also to everyone out there i was on the Marconi site today and they suggest to optimise your ADSL connection use the following IP's.......the 2 they specify are Telkom DNS IP's.....

Talking about DNS on SAIX ISP's , a query of Saix.net on http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=saix.net,
brings up some interesting reading.

Are there "public" Non Saix DNS Servers that us poor Users who use SAIX Connected ISP's can use. It looks like at the SAIX Connected ISP's just resolve their "DNS" Servers to the SAIX DNS Servers which I don't trust.

Any Ideas
