ADSL2+* Modems now available

* Available soon in SA

really? We're getting ADSL2+ soon?

The Linksys ADSL Routers is also 2+. Think it is 25Meg Download. Looks like it is standard now

ADSL2 gives you 24MB ... and I heard that Telkom are busy with a pilot for TV over broadband on a 4MB connection ... your current modems will not support the 4MB and require ADSL2. Either Billion are bringing these modems in to prepare for this, or they want to sell the new technology in preparation for these high speeds that we may see one day.

Oh for one day.... we live in hope.

I recon its more a marketing strategy than anything else ;-)

ADSL goes up to 8MB.

Whipped out the good ol calculator ... for 8MB down, you need a modem that can handle 64 Mbps ... which means ADSL2 can't reach that level.

8Mbps sounds about right for DSL, hopefully we get a fibre offering @ 15mbps, before Telkom comes out 8 on DSL - in about 20 years time! :D

I heard of a company in South Africa that is busy looking at a fibre offering ... to what capacity I do not know ... but I do know that they have sent some here to the US for training. Here's hoping they are tied in with the SNO ... wouldn't that be sweet!

Rumour

Rumour has it, that the SNO already has layed fibre its just a case of they have too build the exchanges for us to connect to... , it involves...Transtel / Eskom who have had there own network for years and years

That is good news if true ... now all they need to do is continue with their good work and run some of that to my house, so I can continue enjoying my 15mb ...

The SNO will be poaching bussiness customers from Telkom ... they are not interested in residential users.

Most standard ADSL modems do support up to 8 Mbps (1MB) out of the box! Maybe some old ones don't. I am not sure what is the max speed of ADSL, but it is >= 8 Mbps for certain.

In regards with the telkom installing 4Mb equipment, it is very wonderful, but if they keep the max cap of 30GB is quite useless. There is not much point in installing some real fast links given that you can usilise only 1-2% of it due to soft limitations. What's the point!
