I am going to be spending time in SA. My family member has a Telkom line already. It looks like do Broadband 2 or 3 would get me up and running. Is that the Telkom offering that makes the most sense?

From reading the forums it seems that going to a Telkom shop is the way to go. Also they stopped giving the free equipment with self install I think.

Do they give you any hardware or do you have to buy a router?

I am bringing a spare Cisco 678 router with me so that should work once I get the correct settings. Anyone set up a Cisco with Telkom? Do you have the settings summarized?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

AFAIK you can still opt fot the self install but will have to pay for the modem if you need one.

Does it make sense that Do Broadband is better than getting say "fastest DSL" at R413 and then having to add the 3gb of traffic? It seems that the Do Broadband packages at for example R554 for Do Broadband 3 make more sense.

Am I missing anything? I need to get my family member rolling on the install.

Thanks guys

AFAIK if you get a 4Mbit line ("fastest") and a TelkomInternet 3GB account, they automatically put you on Do3.

One more question guys. What is the real world timeline once it is ordered at a Telkom shop? The pots line is already there.

If the line is ready/you have been allocated a port, then you are free to do a self-install when ever you want to. Obviously waiting for a technician to come in and do it would take longer.

I meant there is an existing analog line so I don't need to wait for a phone line install. I would have to wait for however long it takes them to add the dsl provisioning to the line. I will be doing the self install.

Thanks

Oh okay.

Well it shouldn't take too long, I know waiting time to get DSL enabled on the line has been cut down dramatically. Perhaps a week, maybe two at the most. Will you be able to get the people who you're going to be staying with to "order" the DSL in advance, before you leave for SA?

Yep that's the exact plan. I am going to get them to get it ordered so I have maybe 1-2 weeks for it to get turned on. I am bringing a cisco 678 router from the US that should work as long as I set up the correct settings/ppoe etc. I just need to look up the settings somewhere so I might be able to have it pre-configured.

You can get a free wireless modem that is guaranteed to work in SA if you take the self-install option.

I will gladly take it if they are still offering. I thought that I read somewhere that they aren't doing that deal for self install any more.

i was under the impression that the free modem was only with 24 month contracts. but i stand to be corrected.

if you go into a telkom shop and ask them to process a self install in dsl enabled area i would be disappointed if the whole process takes longer than a week.

They don't give you a free modem anymore on self installs. They literally laughed at me when I asked them. You have to take out a 24 month contract to get one...
