Telkom's "Do Broadband" offerings are nothing revolutionary.

I spoke to a chap in the UK last year who told me that for 30 pounds a month he gets:

Telephone and ADSL line rental.
Free local and national calls in the U.K.
30 GBytes of bandwidth per month (unshaped).
Up to 6Mbits/s depending on line quality.

That's from British Telecom.

When Telkom offers me the equivalent for the Rand equivalent then I will stop complaining that Telkom is ripping off their clients to enrich their shareholders to the detriment of all South Africans.

i spoke to a dude who seemed like he knew what he was doing today...

Do 3 is available on month to month.
It officially launches on wed so he could not process my application today.
It could take upto 21 days to upgrade my line from 384 to 4mbps

Well I spoke to a lady at Telkom and she said that you can:

-take it on 24 motnh contract + free modem
-self install month to month + free modem
-no self install month to month + R437.50 installation

or that's how I understand it.

My folks just applied for DoBroadband. The options on the form were- as you say - SIO = free wireless router and NO contract
or 24 month contract and router plus install fee


SIO basically buys you out of a contract and gives you the modem. Not a bad deal at all.

No offense Vundla but it actually IS a bad deal, I have said it millions of times now along with my fellow forumites that broadband should NOT be below 1Mbps, it should NOT cost more that R250pm, it should NOT limit you to flippin 3 gigs and it should NOT take 2weeks+ just to ACTIVATE a line for ADSL (the hell Im currently going through to just get my line activated, I took SIO by the way). So Im not a happy camper with this do crap.

I had the closer 5 option, R699 per month with a 3gb Axxess account (extra R180);
I have cancelled this closer 5 option ( and telkom has politely notified me to expect a R295 cancellation charge - which I will be following up with ICASA as a complaint)...
and retained my line (we need to call out)...

I now do not have ADSL at home and would like to do it, but with a cheaper alternative (R880 per month is exorbitant costs per mnth),

e.g. adding the DoBroadband 1 option (at least a 384 line with 1 GB of data is better than no ADSL connection...i need my xbox live fix)...and costs R279per month,

As a ADSL starter price, my minimum costs would be per month:
R100 line rental (TELKOM);
R279 ADSL DoBroadband 1 (TELKOM )
total cost is R379 per month and if we use R100 calls per month, the total cost could jump to R479.00.

I will be choosing the self - install option, therefore there should be no surprise extra costs from TElkom (no installation fees)...

I have done some research, but am still hesitant to apply for this DoBroadband package, as the 384 line is so much slower than the up to 4mbs line im used to and the 1gb is small...( i cant download anything with that cap)...but budget wise, I have no choice!

my questions to the informed ones are:

1. Is the DoBroadband 1, the best and cheapest option to go for, if ones mnthly budget is under R600, for ADSL, line rental, R100 worth of calls, and including a second ISP with a 1Gb unshaped account?
2. How is TElkom as an ISP?
3. What does softcap refer to?
4. With DoBroadband 1, if you have your own Modem / router (NEtgear 834N), some users have replied to another post of mine, that its possible to have TElkom as an ISP and another, e.g. my current ISP Axxess together. I would like to run a 1GB unshaped account through Axxess, once Telkoms 1GB is up or when I hook up the xbox to play gaming online. Some others mentioned Telkom as an ISP could block you from using a second ISP concurrently. I am confused on this one as I would like to sign up for a 1GB unshaped account with another ISP but would be bound to TElkom if they do not allow a second ISP to be used.

Any advice?

The softcap currently means that you get double the cap of your package.

You can run any ISP on the doBroadband packages. At least I should say I have been able to run WebAfrica or TelkomInternet (international) and OpenWeb (local).

The Do 1 package is R279 and the package with telkom would be R245 + R79 isp. saving of around R50 on the do is it worth it...
