Do Broadband

What if I do a self install and don't want their stupid modem 'cause I got one from NetGear with a 3 year warranty? No R435 discount?

Stoke - what if I already have an active DSL line and want to open a Do account? Can I get a month-to-month package from Telkom?
It's not geared towards you. It seems that they want new people only.
@Bondizzo - I don't think they'll be dropping anything. The DO package is designed to provide a single cheap offering from telkom.

And .. you cannot take a do package line and run a different isp's account on it.

I did speak to telkom yesterday but they don't know what's going on yet. We'll just have to wait.

@Bondizzo .. nope. Here's your clue:

Open their fantastic flash application at http://www.do.co.za/broadband/index.html;
Click on Products [far right tab];
Click on the question "Can I subscribe to DSL from telkom and get my internet account from an ISP of my choice".

The first point in their answer indicates that the DO product is not that kind of product.
The second point clearly states that you are welcome to use the other products for the ability to choose your own ISP.

Surely if I have a DSL line I am entitled to use WHATEVER ISP I choose?? That can't be legal if it's true. So if I get capped on Do I'd be screwed for the rest of the month?

And how are they going to stop me from using another ISP?

@speedster ... if you buy the do package then you are entitled to use the do package as it is.

Leagal ... bwaaaahahahahahah .. like ICASA regulations leagal? :sick: Teklom have their own DOC approved version of legal.

@stoke - yes, I can use the do package as it is but I can't see any reason (or way) they can prevent a client from using another ISP as well if he wishes. Take for example somebody with a 20GB openweb local account - are you saying the Do line will prevent access through that account?

@Speedster .. read post 24 above and then read what they say and draw your own conclusions.

Insofar as authentication routing goes, i'm pretty sure they can route by telephone number, they can sure as heck record the telehone number that is authenticating, so it's logical that they can route using that telephone number as well, and simply prevent a specific telephone number PPOE Auth. request from ending up at other ISP Auth. servers.

Logically, the current auth routing uses the part after the @ sign in your login to jump to the correct ISP's authentication server. This point can just be made more clever. And this point belongs to the line owner .. teklom.

nobody knows Jongi - but I'll pop down to the Telkom shop after the weekend and figure out what's up with the whole deal.

Actually it does not matter as this is specifically a TelkomInternet only ISP offering. If you read it any other way you will only be fooling yourself.

@Jongi .. no .. it's a choice between:

- a 24 month contract with free installation with a telkom techie to do the install and 4 port and wireless adsl router.

or

- Pay for installation [R345 or something] and get a free 4 port and wireless adsl router and NO TELKOM TECHIE to help with the install.

:)

Proof: Click on the Order link [you'll have to allow popups], they specify that detail in the contract.

stoke - if you read this, I think it says in no uncertain terms that if you want anything other than explained here then choose any of the other Telkom offerings.

Dude that doesnt make sense, u paying installation charges to install it urself and they reward u a modem?

Who ever thought that up must be really drunk~ Why didnt they just say u have to buy a modem to connect at half the price from before?

I think whoever designed it must have been drinking and didnt put the terms and condition in right.
Best to do is wait a month or two, so telkom can sort themselves out~

Yeah think that means, the other options we always had...
So in easier words, "if u dont like what we offer here, go back to what we offered before"

stoke - You started the reply to my post with no. I understood that to mean you thought that you could use the Do Broadband offering with another ISP.

I'm not so sure... contract says "The Bundled offering is subject to a 24 month agreement whereby you will be penalised should you terminate your subscription before the period of 24 months has lapsed as per the terms and conditions available on this website, www.telkom.co.za/adsl/terms1.jsp"

Guess it depends what they mean by "the bundled offering"? But it sounds to me like it's all on a 24 month contract. I certainly didn't see anything that said that the contract and self-install were mutually exclusive (maybe they've changed the contract since then?)
