It depends on what drives are being used in the servers and personal preference of the infrastructure department.
For example if using NVME drives, then they have no choice but to use software raid.
If they using SSD's then it comes down to personal preference.
We use both hardware raid and software raid depending on the type of solution we implementing.
I personally prefer hardware raid in our servers for 2 reasons.
- It's less work when replacing failed drives.
- It performs better than software raid when the CPU is under heavy load or when it comes to removing or backing up hosting accounts with 300 000+ inodes. (note that this isn't an issue with NVMe drives as they have 64k command queues).
I think you will find a mix, you will even find a lot with dedicate storage arrays configured in either hardware or software raid. You fill find local raid, jbod or something like vSAN. Its not really one or the other
