I'm working on a new API that provides crypto/blockchain related data, including market data (crypto prices, trading volumes, etc), a full block explorer for the bigger chains, fee tracking/estimators, etc.

The API requires a monthly subscription fee, which most users will probably pay with crypto. But other than that, I do not provide any "financial services", like crypto swaps, wallet management, custody, or financial advise.

Do I need a CASP/VASP license for this? I would assume no, since I'm not providing any financial services. I only have a REST API with GET endpoints and the only place actual crypto/wallets are involved are during the subscription payment. But reading up on this, a lot of the documents are extremely vague - often using terms like "all cryptocurrency platforms" have to register for CASP. I just want to make sure I do not operate a business without a license.

can't imagine you'd need a license if it really is information only, the FSCA tends to mean a place where crypto is traded or stored on behalf of customers when they say "cryptocurrency platforms"

the bit on financial advice can catch people by surprise though e.g. if your "market data" comes with a clear buy/sell signal it can be interpreted as financial advice

in the UK they take an extreme view on this, showing price highs/lows/trade volume over a 24hr period is seen as promoting crypto vs over a year period it is not (yes it can get that stupid, so think twice before launching in the UK I guess)
