I have some experience rooting and flashing phones, but rarely are phones network locked in South Africa.
But My friend brought home a T-Mobile Prism from USA, which when we put in a different sim card and the phone wants a code before it will allow data.

Are there programs (like Odin for Samsung's) that I can unlock it with (is that the term?) or does one need to pay those dodgy looking sites for a code?

Give T-Mobile a call using Google Voice and ask them for the code - say you're going to use it abroad. Worked with AT&T when I bought my Sierra Wireless modem and needed a network unlock code.

I'm not sure if this will help but check this out

Seems to work on non rooted android phones
Hmmm thanks, but it is just like those sites

And they just gave it to you for free?
