Hi

I am currently getting fibnre installed and was wondering if I need the CPE.

I have a Mikrotik Router that takes SFP modules, which means I can install a fibre module (https://shop.dbg.co.za/RBS-85DLC05D.html)

Couldn't I just get the installer to plug the fibre directly into the Mikrotik eliminating the need for a CPE, or does the CPE need to be installed for other reasons?

Just curious

I think all networks recommend that you use their ONT and only use copper ethernet after.

The ONT is used as an authentication device as well as converting the fibre to copper, you usually get a number assigned to your ONT so you can only use that specific ONT with your connection.

If you tried to connect the optical cable to your own router without authenticating through the ONT first, your connection wouldn't work.

That's at least how I think it works for most networks.

Octotel gave me a very similar story when I asked if I could use my own.

@OP, why don't you get them to give you an ONT and then try using your own and report back? They don't bill you for the ONT.

Your FNO will have a hissy fit if it's not their CPE. Management, provisioning, debugging it all comes with their platforms. Yes, fibre might be fibre, but realistically, having their box just makes it easier.

Trust me. Not worth the effort. Not gonna make it faster or better either, and will likely just end up in a support nightmare....

you must use the one from the ISP as they program it and keep it up to date with firmware etc, besides, it's free

I ended up accepting the ISP's free router. But now the damn thing needs an ONT Router since the free router does not have media converter. Now the ISP is dragging its feet. I am starting to feel regret now that my productivity is taking a knock.

aaaaii nooooo, damn that sux :cautious:
hang in there, i hope you get sorted soon

Just clarifying... ONT (Fibre provider CPE) and ISP CPE (router) are 2 VERY different devices. Fibre CPE converts fibre to copper handoff and maintains the FNO's network. Router does either PPPoE or DHCP to the wan and then NAT for your network. I personally have a PC running pfSense as my router plugged into the Vumatel Raycore CPE.

YMMV as always
