So where i'm staying at the moment has had its exchanges upgraded to support up to 40MB. I am on 10MB now, if I upgrade to 20MB will my line just stop working if I have a regular ADSL modem and not a VDSL modem?

Depends on the port. They have to put you on VDSL modulation.
You should want to be VDSL, you have less overheads and more upload.

If you can convince them to give you 20Mbps ADSL on the MSAN, then you an keep your current router (if it can handle ADSL2+).
Ok so not without some effort and being lucky enough to find someone at telkom who actually understands this.

Problem is that they are "programmed" to punt VDSL as soon as you go above 10Mbps.
