Morning

ok i have a q8200 (or something like that) and running on 2.5 gigs of ram and 450w psu

now here's the problem i got about 4 sata drives in my box ranging from 160gb to 250gb and then i have 2 ext hdd's one 750gb and the other 1tb, the 2 ext hdd are not connected very often so it's usually the 4 internal drives that are always on. my question is do i need to upgrade my psu because of all the drives or should the 450w be fine ?

on the odd occasion (sp) that all the drives are connected (inc the 2 ext) will i have a problem with the psu ?
the ram i plan on upgrading soon to 4gb so i'm not to concerned about that.

I cant say for sure about old hard drives, but everything I've seen over the last two years draws a max of 10W (more like 8W). I doubt you'd have a problem, but it does depend alot on what other bits you are running as well, specifically CPU and GPU. Go here and have a look at what you your power draw is most likely to be.

thanks ! with the 6 drives it estimates 381w so i should be good for now. much appreciated

You should be fine.

When you get a graphics card then come ask us again.

9500gt doesnt really suck juice. Just remember that not all 450watt psus are the same.

You should still be ok though.
