Hey guys I have a Canon mf8280cw but if I try print within 3cm of the right hand side of the page it fills that whole area with red lines. Is it worth trying to get it fixed or do I buy a new one? It seems like something that might be a big issue.

And can you guys suggest any good home/small office multifunction printers? I'm really tired of printers that don't work properly.

Thanks

cost of repair vs cost of new printer.

This canon printer is a color laser so you would have to check the fuser unit or drum unit or reb(magenta) toner. these can be expensive to replace just for testing purposes, only to find out its the mainboard.

So unfortunately in this day and age its normally better just to buy a new printer.

If you find one, please let me know. I've tried them all, and I'm convinced they are all programmed to die after about a year of usage. My attic is filled with the bodies of old multifunction printers. The inkjet printers seem to be the worst, but I've had colour laser printers die on me too. I've pretty much reconciled myself to the fact that any printer I buy is disposable and only going to last a year.

+1

Done with HP after 2 broke within a year, and they had huge printing issues with Windows 10. Currently using a Samsung laser with the imaging units built into the toner cartridges. So far its working brilliantly, but time is the ultimate test.....

What amazes me about just about any of the inkjets that I had, is that the replacement ink cartridges costs almost the same as a new printer!

It's often cheaper to just buy a new printer every time your ink runs out and use the ink that the new printer comes with.

Printers do the complete opposite of what we are trying to do. We should try to get everything inside the computermatron and interwebs - not outside it.

New printers come with only half the ink/toner of replacement cartridges.

Sure, but my point is that printers break so often you might as well just a buy a new printer every time you run out of ink.

RICA and FICA

I refuse to print anything. I'll even (and have done so) take screenshots, paste them in MS Paint, the fill them in and past my scanned signature on them. Then print the bitmaps back to a PDF and email it.

Printers and Fax needs to be annihilated.

I can't help laughing when a business asks me to "fax" them something. Unbelievably you still get people who use fax machines in the 21st century. My usual response is to remind them that this isn't the 80's anymore.

Fax is still the only method of document transmission available in many rural areas despite governments much vaunted broadband initiative :(

Most rural areas I've been to no longer have Telkom lines because they've all been stolen. How do you fax without a landline?

The red pretty solid or are they narrow lines?

If it's narrow lines then it could likely be the toner drum that's faulty. You can take it to a cartridge refill place and they can swop the drum for you. A place in the cape i usually go to asks about R50 to do it.

If it's solid red then i'd guess it's the fuser film that has degraded. Did you spot any bits of grey'ish plastic coming out with some print jobs at one stage?

I've never replaced one on a colour laser so not sure if each toner has it's own fuser since your lines are only red but with some patience you could open the printer and take a look. Youtube has lots of videos on taking apart printers.

Thievery must be a Cape thing, here in the East Cape there's plenty of demand for fax rolls - possibly the local chiefs have inventive ways of dealing with cable thieves :D
