It was sold to Lenovo, not outsourced. Also keep in mind Lenovo has has several laptop products lines, the Thinkpads are still good.

Thing is… who wants to buy a three year old windows laptop?

I've got a 3 year old Acer laptop at home. The battery lasts about 10min. The trackpad no longer works. The keyboard dips in on the left side and basically lost its sensitivity. Yay.

I'll take it off your hands for R1000.

When they fail, Panasonic support gets an A+ rating.

Of course Panasonic makes military grade laptops for the US military too. US military do not use Dell's ruggerdised machines, but use Panasonic's. which kind of tells you all you want to know.

Why NEC is cool is that NEC ONLY makes notebooks for the Japanese domestic market. They don't care about exports because they don't want to lower standards. It's a tough choice - a Panasonic or an NEC, but these are the best you can get. And they are pricey.
