Do Macbooks still have the design edge?

There's the price of the SSD in the mac, then there's the price of the SSD I'd have to buy to use as a backup that can be used to swap out the internal drive should there be a problem. I do a smart copy of my drive whenever I leave the house with the laptop after a lesson lesson learnt the hard way. :o

Ouch ! Costly. Are these not proprietary SSDs in the Retina MB Pros ?

You can't just back it up to an external hdd? You really need an ssd standing by on backup? That way madness lies.

I think it is to do more with downtime. Having another SSD carbon copied means if the current drive shuffles-off-its-mortal-coil, slip in carbon copy, and zoom again in 12 minutes it takes to replace the drive. To have to purchase and fit a replacement and restore from external drive image takes a lot longer.

Hit the ground running after a failure methinks. Time is money of some.

That or a second macbook. Right now in the event of a hdd failure I can pop in the backup in a matter of minutes - then all I have to do is reimport anything I've shot since the last backup. Having to source a replacement drive and then restore the contents of a external drive would take a lot more time.

Or just boot off of an external as a temporary measure?

I could, and it would be much less painful if I had a fw or thunderbolt external case, but I don't. The thing is it's so easy to just swap out the drive.

When I can afford one I plan to get an ssd for my MBP, if it fails I know I can just pop in the old HDD.

Maybe that's the point. I can barely remember the brand of laptops that I bought with windows installed.
 
I moved to Macs and OSX 6 years ago. I can say for a fact that the hardware is better - my computers are lasting way longer than the plastic crap of the competition. And the software doesn't drive me crazy like windows did - bloated crap that used to run in the background all the time slowing the machine down, and continually wanting to reboot to load some or other crap.

But ja, you naysayer boys carry on with your plastic boxes if it makes you happy....see if i care :)
 
Using a Mac/ Mac Retina is like using 2-ply toilet paper... not essential, as you can get by with 1-ply or leaves and sticks.

And Microsoft's response with Windows 8 is to cache all that crap for faster startup, and people go "wow this OS is great. It starts up faster than Windows 7....", instead of dealing with the fact windows gathers crap as time goes.

Spec for spec my laptop is basically the same as this macbook but it costs R10 000 less.

The only thing I can't (and don't want to ) do with my laptop is walk around Sandton City and look like a pretentious prat. Also forgot my "Mark of Jobs" sticker that I have to stick on my car's rear window to show everybody that I am part of the cult.

Not necessarily, specifications wise its the same but from what I have discerned Apple has an exceptionally high quality control policy enforced on its production line or the production line from its manufacturers. Not to say other hardware brands don't do this, in my experience most of Gigabyte's hardware except for its lowest of the low end (and these are still pretty good) is top notch, but for Apple they are exceptionally strict.
