So i'm in my 25th month of my original top-up contract, still can't decide whether i want to port or stay. However i was at MTN the other day enquiring bout the new contracts, considering having the AnyTime 100 or the Off-Peak 100, more the off peak option seeing i dont phone during the day too often and will most likely add a sms bundle for sms's.

The crux of the situation comes in here, I want the option of it being a Top-Up contract to control my spending as qoute unquote MTN say
Available on all new MTN packages, TopUp provides the perfect mix of contract and PayAsYouGo benefits. Just choose the amount you want to spend each month and when that’s used up, simply top up with airtime just as you would with previous PayAsYouGo packages.

So I enquire about a cheap phone on Off-Peak 100 Top-Up (already have a SE W960 from a different contract), so this guy tells me straight that I cant do that. Its Anytime, Anytime TopUp or Off-Peak. I'm like i'm quiet sure you can add it to both, he says i'm wrong. A WTF moment and a awkward stare at him

He then goes on to tell me how he doesnt know why anyone would take the Off-Peak option its so dumb. So i smile and think to myself yeah i'm sure this dude has a three year marketing degree behind his name the way he's talking about it. Not....different people have different spending habits my good friend. Sigh.

So i'm like ok give me a cheap phone on AnyTime 100 TopUp, its gonna cost R75, however if I take a pure Anytime 100 (same phone) its R49..?...I must pay more for the top up option? Sigh, to what extent.

Don't think MTN even know how their new contracts work, and right now neither do I.
Another trip another day, same old, same old....

Just proves how useless service is in this country...

The dimwits in the MTN shops need extended training just to know how their contracts work. There are too many stupid people in this country. Its like "come work for MTN, the only requirement is an IQ under 90". I've been having similar issues with this new contract system and useless service. If they don't know the answer they make up a story. What is the file size limit you can save on to the blackberry? "No sir, err there is no file size limit on what you download with the blackberry internet service. Its unlimited internet you can umm download as much as you want." Feeding lies to clients to catch them is not on. And there I was thinking MTN service is good.

Topup has always had less "glamorous" phones. Generally the projected revenue on a topup is less than a normal contract. I.e. dads getting topups for kids, etc, fixed budgets and so on. On normal contracts the "limit" on the contract is higher and users typically go "out of bundle" on it, so the revenue per contract is higher and so they can offer more expensive phones.
Anyway, that's my theory on that one.

I think the only thing they know about the new contracts is what their sales commisison is one each one.

Sales commisisons are lower on the Topup contracts, so the sales people will push the other contracts for a higher commission.

MTN ends up with happy sales people and unhappy customer. Hopefully they'll learn their lesson.
