Do the HP ProLiant MicroServers like the N36L & N40L need unregistered ECC Memory or is that just the optimal memory to use but normal DDR3 1333mhz will still work fine?

In those Microservers what is the advantage of unregistered ECC DDR3 over normal DDR3?
In that vein can normal desktops use unregistered ECC DDR3 Memory?

Hi,
Quick answer from a noob. I added a 4G normal stick to my N54L with existing 2G ECC. Bios showed I had 6G memory. Freenas 9.3 seemed to run OK.
ECC ram is preferred for server OS as far as my googling has found.

But they do support unregistered ECC 1333mhz memory?
