Do they replace them?

When someone leaves/ resigns at where you work does the company advertise for a replacement or are they not replacing the person?

I have heard most companies are not replacing the positions now which is scary!

Is that the case where you work?

The last guy to be employed was retrenched November 2019. He won't be replaced, colleagues have shouldered the extra load.

^^This, a.t.m we are at half staff and every one has to do the work of 3

Depends on the industry and the importance of the position.

In my industry, competent developers and IT people are generally always in demand. At my employer, we're looking, but not finding (competency that is).

I would imagine similar for engineering and other technical roles. Finance seems very saturated.

Definitely real, for office staff there have been no replacements for any resignations in the last 3 years probably. Bar 1 or 2 out of probably 10-12 employees at a rough guess.

I used to work in the IT dept of a large hotel group. When one of us quit it would take 3-4 months to get a replacement. We just had to take up the slack. So glad I don't work there anymore. I heard it's worse there now.

Guess it also depends on restructuring and technology changes within in the company. My wife works for a smaller firm and they have been under staffed now for a couple of years, apparently no money to employ more people. Bigger companies might actually be able to change things a bit and get away fine with fewer people. Others just don't have a choice. In 'IT' I've heard there are always people needed but difficult to find those who can actually do what is required.

We've been advertising since the last guy left in August last year. We've got to stick to the BEE rules, so yeah the candidate selection has been abysmal

we hardly replace, just add more duties to other colleagues

We've had an employment freeze for the last two years. Apart from general manager (i..e above HOD level) there have been no new appointments. Contractors' contracts aren't being renewed either.

If you retrench someone you can't replace them for a specified time period anyway. I don't think retrenchment is what the OP had in mind though.

OP asked if staff get replaced. Company has no intention of filling his position ever.

My previous company, we were a team of 8 and people started leaving without been replaced. When I left in 2019 there were 2 left. Workload is crazy. Seems management don't care about the wellbeing of their staff.
