I'm a new user, I do nothing strange, no web servers, no P2P

the download side of my stats seems to correspond to my usage.

The uploaded side however seems to correspond to the days I send large emails but x100 of the size which is taking a HUGE bite of my cap

example I sent about 6mb of emails on the 7th but I see 600mb on the usage stats for that day ?

anyone else seeing this effect ?

You sending to multiple recipients? If so, apply as a multiplier, unless you sending to another server that's doing the distribution with recipient addresses on that server...

Doesn't matter how many people you send it to, the e-mail forwarding is done at the POP3 server and not at your own PC. That is, if you send a 2MB email to one person or 100 people, it'll still only count as 2MB.

Nope simply sending large zip files to 1 person, I'm a SW developer, these days were the days I uploaded new versions to the web site & emailed it to some customers.

The source email address is non telkom, but I have set the outgoing SMTP server to smtp.dsl.telkomsa.net

I am connecting thru a firewall so it can't be a virus from the outside, busy checking for viruses on my side now.

Which makes assumptions about JAKE's setup, not necessarily true... Nevertheless, now that it's known that Telkrap's smtp server is being used, each individual email message transmitted to the smtp server (including the size of its attachments), will count towards your cap volume. Multiple recipients of the same message on the address record will not cause a multiplier effect, as stated by VOICE - that will be taken care of by Telkrap's server. Methinks you'll have to look elsewhere, maybe ask Telkrap for the logs for those days, to analyse the traffic...

Something else just struck me - you requesting recipient receipts? I've seen this before, though it could not be explained, even by the sendmail experts at the time (eventually ascribed to a bug, and which disappeared after a recompile): the automatic receipt had attached to it the attachments to the original message, for some weird reason. Just a thought, as ridiculous as it might be - of course, completely irrelevant in the event of no recipient receipting...

The counter seems to be >24 hours old, today it says my uploads for the 21st were 1.4GB how is this possible ? my total for the month is 1.7 down & 2.3 up.

this time not so much email

I have now checked for virii
I cannot see large values on the Netgear 834 firewall/modems counters
I do not notice any activity other than my own
the netgear's logs report a DOS attack at least once an hour but should be blocked ?

only other strange setups:
I accessed a CD drive on a companies machine via windows map network drive, (company has telkom leased line) & kept the explorer open for a few hours, did not copy anything, did not notice undue traffic.

I have a dynamic dns configured on the Netgear, pointing to a machine but no web server running on that machine at present (HTTP is only open port).

does anyone know of any viruses floating about causing similar issues ?

You have a serious problem there. I'm also running a NetGear 834 router (+ a D-Link one) and obviously only allowing the ports that I need. There's a fair amount of dos, sasser and blaster worm attacks each day (about every 10 secs), but otherwhise when I'm not using the adsl the traffic is few MB at most.
Something (software, worm or someone) has outbount trafic that you really need to look at. Maybe try something like CommView.

I had the same problem when I first used my account - only to find out that I had to change the password on my ADSL Router Pots - some freaking scumbag somehow used this to drain my useage in two days. Telscum tech conveniently forgot to tell me that you are supposed to chnage the password.

Yup Lourens,

That's exactly what happened, you have to go to extreme lengths to get telkom to give you the port logs. it is quite clear someone on another city was using my account & used about 2.5 gig in one 30 hour period, mostly uploads - probably P2P.

See my post "Change your password & protect it with your life"

That freaking scumbag is lurking here in the forum; I saw in one post the other day that he boasted about the more than 100gig of stuff that he had downloaded in one month. Can you believe no more than a common criminal that is what he is!

I spit on your mamma’s grave scumbag!

I just don't geddit - I would think that usurped usage is based on account detail, and has nothing to do with the router? Surely the Telkrap usurpers are manipulating your account on the 'external' side of your router, without even accessing it? Assuming I'm correct, how would you change your account password without involving a Telkrap employee?

email was not meant for attachments. it can only transfer text. attachments are base64 encoded when sent. this could increase the size dramatically.
